I was thinking about trying to build my own guitar effects boxes, just to give me something to do? Is it worth it, and will they work, and so on? Where can I get circuit layouts on the net, and are they public domain?

Cheers, Jim

i know nothing about electronics, but i've always been very interested in them.... i have only every built things that come in "kit" form with implicit instrucions.... unfortunatly most of the kit stuff i can get hold of isn't really musician oriented... here is the kit stuff i've built

metronome : worked out really well, and works well as a paperweight

mic pre-amp: "there's solder in my eye, HELP" this one was a disaster inever even got to the "testing" stage

theremin: this sukkah kicks arse!!@!, so much so i have dedicated it to its own amp... makes an excellnt "pad" for songs... i play it while i'm not drumming... this thing rocks i should post a sound clip of it sometime :)

o.k. now back to the issue at hand, my next project will be my first non-kit form capacitor-resistor-transistor, straight off the plan, no pre scored pcb, 999% likely too fuck up and get solder in my eye job...

i am planning on building a fuzz face style distortion box.... this seems simple enough, i'll attatch it....

btw do a web search for "ampage" this is an electronics forum i found yesterday (unfortunatly i cleaned out my history and temp folders so i dont know the url)

DIY electronics is almost always more expensive than buying off the shelf.

It's only worth it for the enjoyment, if you're building something that you just can't buy anywhere, or you're replicating a "vintage" piece of equipment that cost gads of money because it's turned into a collectors item .

Yo JimmyChan, number one son of Charley:

Ever since Heath Kits were on the market, long ago, kits for everything have been available. I'd rather spend the time recording than getting "solder in my eyes...."

If the instructions that come with electronic kits are anything like the manuals that come with multi-trackers and DAWS, I'd rather buy a unit already made and with the specifications I'm looking for. But, if you like to tinker, that's what Jules Verne did.

Ahhh! That's what he was saying!

I always wondered what the hell a "numbawan sun" was! ;)

But it's still not clear to me how that funny Anglo guy who liked to wear mascara managed to have all those Asian sons? He must have adopted. :D

Heh, heh.... Man, did I love those Charlie Chan movies when I was a kid....I still dig them. Charley Chan, no matter who was the actor, was kind of like my Dad.

My Dad always told me, "Say hello and shut up...." Heh, heh, I love it.

Wish we had your weather here in Michigan. Ugly here. Clouds, rain, and cool. But, summer is somewhere between China and Frisco.

Enjoy,

I spent most of my life in Pittsburgh. I feel your pain GH.

And Michigan weather may suck for the most part, but just be happy you're not looking at $1/2 million for a 1500 sqft starter home with a postage stamp sized backyard.
