Budget Monitor placement

I'm planning on getting some new (nearfield) monitors over the summer months, and unfortunately, I don't have an ideal room to put them in. There are numerous rooms I could try, but what kind of characteristics should I look for? Big, small, carpet, etc? I'm really new to this aspect of recording, so any information is appreciated.
