If you didn't get a manual with your 788 you can download a PDF file (you'll need Adobe Acrobat) from here. Just click the link below the photo ;)

What's so bloody wonderful about the SM57? The damn things are all mids with hardly any top or bottom worth speaking of.

Whoops, sorry, I forgot. They sound great through £500+ pre-amps

He is using a Realistic on drums and the PG58 on guitar. Why not start some 57's? If they don't work on "punk"vocals he can use one on snare and another on guitar amp. Besides, you can't hold a LD condensor in your hands while you sing or swing it around by a mic chord. And, they can't be spray painted!

Okay, I'll give them that.

But I still don't think that plastic bit that spins round at the top can possibly be able to take the kind of abuse these mics are reputed to be able to withstand.

James, I like the attitude of your posts--you sound like a good guy who's done some homework. I've done a lot of homework, too, and even though I have 30 years on you, I picked up a couple of Studio Projects B1 mics and couldn't be happier with the sound. It's the most consistently highly rated mic I've found for
under $100--just clean and clear, without that harshness that I've found in some cheaper mics. If you can get this mic in the UK, then I don't think you can go wrong. You would need phantom power, though, which you'll need one of these days, anyhow.

BTW, I hear the Tascam's a great machine.

Good luck,

J.

Try an AKG

I'm a huge AKG mic fan....

Try the D8000 (d8000s is the same with a switch, i prefer not to use a switch, especially for live as they pop and performers tend to like to play with them). They're the most universal handheld mic I've seen. The sound is pretty transparent, but the little color that there is leans toward the dark side. But this can easily be fixed via EQ if you're looking for something a bit brighter.

The great thing about this mic is that along with having a very good sound, it has a built in pop filter and windscreen right inside the capsule that are removable for cleaning. I love this, because you can have the benefit of pop filtering onstage (bc it's unsightly to have a bigass 6" popfilter live) and windscreens are always nice, I guess....

Its an extremely versatlile mic. They list for 249 US, but you can get a 2pack of them for 50 at musicians friend, or for 30 bucks more you can get both mics, plus 2 stands, 2 clamps, and 2 cables. (The cables are shit but the stands are axman, I don't know how they pulled that off??!!)

This has to be the worst advice I've ever heard on this board. He wants an all around mic. Why would you pick a dynamic? Dynamics suck for vocals, acoustic guitars, tamborines, shakers, and strings. Condensors are better at all those sources plus they work on all the things dynamics excel at.

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad advice. This guy isn't asking for a live setup, he's asking for a recording setup.

i have to agree. virgoanmethod, if you haven't noticed yet this is primarily a recording website. don't confuse people with off-beam advice for live gear!

also i'm not at all an akg fan...including most of the dynamics i've heard!

if it were me i'd buy an SP b-1 or maybe two. don't worry about a mixer at this stage unless you really want it, it won't add that much. having said that, if you do want it, it's a better long term investment than ending up with a phantom power block you don't need in a year's time.

Dynamic mics can sound great on vocals, horns, amps, drums, and etc.

Hey,
Thanks for all these reccomendations. Yeah, If I got a dynamic mic it would be an SM57, but these SP B1's are getting very good reccomendations so I'll have a good look at them. The mic's I have work fine for live, but for recording I feel I need something a bit better quality

Whatever you do, you may want to audition all the mics before you buy any... unless you have extra money to throw away.

I won't be able to audition anything other than the Shure mics. Theyre the only ones my local music shop sells that are anything better than cheap ones. The others I'd have to buy online.

James

yeah they do. i dont live near turnkey or digital village, so i cant go there to try them out. even the large music shops in manchester which i can get down to don't stock anything better than Shure mics.

James

Bloody hell, that does suck . At least my local AOS usually has some Rodes, AKGs and SEs in stock.

my local AOS is pretty useless. I got my Tascam 788 from there but only because it was in the sale. The best mics they have are Shure.

James

I guess we must be relatively lucky here then.

When I say "usually" I mean, they usually have some Rodes, OR some AKGs, OR some SEs in stock. Sometimes two out of the three makes at the same time!

It always tends to be quite a bit cheaper online though. My local music shops are often £20 - £25 more expensive than if I buy online. I know that's usual but is it really worth spending that much extra just to try it first?

James

is there not a sound control store in manchester nowadays? they're much better than AOS in my experience. but with AOS or sound control the key is NEVER PAY THEIR PRICE!! they'll always reduce it. once i got a set off stage monitors half price cos they had an in-store demo that night and no more space to move stuff!

if you count in digital village's p+p or any other charges like that, i find the shops are happy to match. my problem is that SC only deal with certain brands so at this point you won't find any SP stuff there, or things like crafter or tanglewood guitars....figure that one out.
