b sabbath - sweet comment, thanks
muzeman - I'll play with reverb more, but I want that up-close sound for this album
lt bob - cheers
crawdad - hey, thanks - flute, voice and guitar through a Rode NTK and a Mindprint Envoice. Also
an AKG C480B on the guitar. I think the only way to get a better sound, short of buying a very expensive mic and a Grace or Davisound pre, is to work on the room, which is what I'm doing now.
drstawl - yeah, fair enough, but it's the best I can do right now. The flute tracks cost me about $600. A few months ago, somebody at work was selling a new Yamaha flute for half price. I couldn't say no. However, I couldn't play flute either (I just got dizzy like crawdad), so I signed up for lessons. Four months later, I can get the sound you heard here. Also, when flutes play together (even when people really know how to play them), interesting things crop up in the sound - extra tones and stuff - a bit of that might be affecting the sound here.
yiordanaki - good, I'm glad you found it relaxing. On this album, I put a lot of the lyrics with heavy content against rather calm or upbeat music. It entertains me that while I'm singing about some really hair-raising stuff, somebody's contentedly humming along and feeling mellow.
