Bridge pickup for Strat?

At the moment I have an MIM Strat and I love its versatility (mainly the tremolo - one of the few reasons I don't use a Tele) but the quackiness really gets to me. It sounds very synthetic, and not particularly pleasing, except maybe for blues or something. I want a more clangy, almost Tele-like sound, are Duncan Twang Bangers really appropriate (there's no samples of them on the site) or should I go for Lace something? I really wish Lace had a comparison CD or webpage with audio samples so I could listen.

Joe Bardens, if you want that Tele Twang.

To give a bit more detail to that answer, you will not get a Tele sound from any pickup in a standard Strat position, because of the angle of the pickup. The pickup in a Tele is at a more extreme angle than the one in a Strat, which gives it that extra brightness. If you want that Tele bridge pickup sound, you will need to get a Tele pickup, and have the guitar and pickguard routed for it. Actually, now that I think of it, many of the cheaper Strats just have a large square cavity, instead of individual pockets. If that is the case, then you would just need to cut a new hole in the pickguard.

I don't strictly or specifically want the tele sound, just less quack. I'm not overly attached to the Tele sound either (a bit saturated and hot, if that's an accurate way of describing it), but it's better. I'll check out the Joe Bardens for one, thanks.

Check out some of the Kinman replacement sets. Some are advertised as having less quack/chime in the 2 and 4 positions. You'd also lose the single coil noise by switching to a Kinman.

Well, in that case, the other thing I would look into is the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, or the Lil `59. The Hot Rails have the same basic idea as the Bardens, but are a little less bright, and have a little more body, and they definitely have more output. They still live in that Strat family sound, but just give you a little more. These are a particularly good idea as Joe Barden appears to be having some production issues lately, and no one can get any of his pickups.

You should think about talking to the guys at Black Rose Customs. They really know their stuff.

Their is aways the option of just changing your wiring as well to get different sounds.

Drop a detailed email to BRC's and they will give you some ideas. They suggsested pick ups and wired up my last two strats based on my desires and I could not be happier.
