Hi,

im trying to record some vocals, going through condensor mic, pre amp, compressor onto pc. The singer has quite a breathy tone and at the end of some lines tails off so you cant quite make out the lyrics. His voice has a good texture and feel to it, so i was wondering how can i make the whisper bits at the end sound more understandable but still like a whisper????

cheers

A neat trick is to have the vocalist record a second take that is just whispering the whole vocal part in time with the sung version. Then compress it and bring that track up under the sung track till you can make out the words better.

Cheers for the help, i will give that trick a go tmix, nice one.

Without a doubt, the squashed-to-death-whisper-track is one of the most popular and effective techniques in recording. Probably second only to the hidden cowbell track.

Whoops! Did someone say COWBELL?

Dang, I loved the Cowbell sketch.... it seems to be gone
from the website tho... link doesn't work.

I got it ... genius! A breathy compressed cowbell double track has gotta be the ultimate combo then.
