Whats up guys? Just let me start off by saying hi...Im new to this site. I have a quick question. I have been hearing in a lot of songs ( hip hop mostly) a breaking effect that is being used to cover up curses in songs. It sounds similar to a dj using the brake on a turntable. I was wondering if there was a plugin that was being used to achieve this effect. Ive been messing around with the graph mode in auto tune and i kinda got it to work, but I was wondering if there was a better suited plugin for this effect. Thanks.

Not quite sure the effect you're talking about, don't really listen to hip hop, but from what you describe it sounds like you're talking about the effect when the playback slows down, drops in pitch and then stops?

If so, you can try the Tapestop plugin from KVR. It's free. Here's the link:

The other possibility is to load up the part that you want to slow down into a sampler, pitchbend down and stop.

Its just a pitch bend.

If you use soundforge it comes as standard in that.

Thanks guys. I use a mac with pro tools 7 LE. I don think that plug in will work with my mac. If its just a pitch bend I can probably use auto tune to graph it out then?

Autotune probably isn't the best tool for this. Use a sampler instead.

This is sample manipulation, its not a plugin!!! GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY DAMMIT!!!

I dont know...I dont think its manipulating the sample. I know what your talking about, but I dont think that is what Im looking for. I want it to be a brake effect...not a pitch shift effect. Im gonna look for an example and post it tonight.

When you break/stop a turntable or a reel-to-reel machine, it doesn't just come to a stop, but there is a period where the medum is slowing down, however quickly it may be. This causes the pitch to drop and the time to lengthen in proportion. This is why I stated that autotune isn't going to cut it and you need a sampler to emulate, because with a sampler, you can simply do a quick pitch bend down, which will also slowdown the playback of the sample, and then stop.
