Hello,all.
Longtime lurker here, first time poster.First off,I did search all threads and did not find an answer to my query.
I am using a Boss BR1600CD,and am not always able to burn my songs to cd.I first tried a few weeks ago,to no avail. The drive would appear to be writing and finalizing.I would then pop out the disc and try it in my stereo, which would recognize a track, but there is nothing on it.I would then try it in the Boss, and I would get a "wrong disc!" message. After much hair pulling,I finally called the Roland help line, and they told me not to use "audio" cd-rs,but "data" cd-rs.Truthfully,I didn't think there was a difference.I thought the labels were merely marketing.Anyway, after trying Memorex and Maxell "music" cds,I bought some Philips "unspecified use" cds.Voila! They worked.Good to go,right? No.I am now trying to burn another song, and the problem remains,no matter what discs I use.I have followed the manual to the letter(it really is a simple process) and am at my wits end.I am thinking I must have a defective burner, but I'd like to exhaust all possibilities before sending the unit off for God knows how long.Any ideas are appreciated. Also what cd-rs do you all use?
thanks,
Bill

Still could be the blank media. I brought a stack of 100 and they won't burn. Another stack didn't have any problems.

Your machine is definitely broken

No. No. No. Has nothing to do with the media. I have a BR-1600CD and I alway burn on audio CD's not data CD's. I use Sony and Maxell. I've never ever had a problem and I've literally burned hundreds of CDs. Sounds like your unit is bad.

I'd get it checked out I've also burned a lot of CD's (MAXELL CD-R MUSIC 80) and people played them back on their stuff and they worked !

Don't buy audio CD's its a waste of money. Data cd's work just fine in my 1180, and the burner and software is the same for the 1600. My guess is its a user error. You might be missing a step or something simple.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.I've since gone back and tried to burn a song that had previously worked, thinking perhaps my new song's master track had some sort of error. No dice. The irritating thing is the fact that it has worked a few times before.I don't believe I'm missing any steps,as it's laid out so simply in the manual.I've tried burning while in mastering mode immediately after mastering. When that didn't work,I've saved the song, rebooted, and retried in input mode.Again,no go.I've tried Maxell,Memorex, and Philips cd-rs.The only ones that worked(though only a few times) were the Philips, and I've gone through about 15 of those today with no luck.I guess I'll resort to the help line once again.I just hate the idea of sending this thing off.I've recorded some instrumental music for my brother's bodybuilding show in May,and I have no way to get it to him.Okay,I'm done whining(for now).

Thanks again.

If you do have to send it off (which sucks if you do) keep us posted as to how that goes, and how long it takes.

i would suggest describing EXACTLY what your process is. I also have the 1600, and have had NO problems burning CD's. It sounds like you have a bad burner, but try posting your exact process here first b4 sending it off to never never land.

One more thing to consider. I built an angled desk for my equipment and I had my 1180 at about a 15 degree angle so I could easily reach the controls while I was recording and playing. Suddenly I couldn't burn any CD's and I kept getting error messages when I would access the Hard Drive repeatedly (using the punch in feature). I slapped my forehead when I realized my stupidity. Both the harddrive and the CD R need to be on a level surface to functin properly and i I had deliberately placed the unit on an incline. So I leveled it out and haven't had a problem since. Moral of the story... Keep your unit on a flat level surface.

The unit is on a flat desk.I even turned off my pc,thinking there might be some kind of interference(hey,at this point,I'll try anything).
As far as my process goes-just like the book says:
1. Input mode-record all my tracks
2. Bounce mode-mixdown my tracks to 9/10(stereo pair)
3. Mastering mode-master to 9/10
----save after each procedure----
4. Push "Audio cd write/play"
5. Select write "track at once"
6. Choose track 9/10 & the master v-track(#2 in this case)
7. Choose writing speed (8X)
8. Write
9. Finalize
Anyway, after pretty much eliminating any kind of procedural error,I called the help desk again. They had me check my operating system version(hold "stop" and "play" while booting up).Mine is 1.10,the old version. They are sending me an update, free of charge. She also suggested that I backup all data, initialize the hard drive, and do a surface scan(a defrag, she says).Given my unsuccessful attempts at burning my songs,I didn't hold much hope that I could do a data backup,so I tried one song first.I then hit recover song, and it recognized it!So I am now in the process of backing up the whole drive to cd-r(this is taking a while!).I'll let you all know how this turns out.Once again, many thanks for the replies.

Why,God?Why?

Well, here's the latest in the ongoing saga.I backed up my hard drive. No errors, apparently.I backed up a song file first to make sure it would take.It did.I then initialized the hard drive and did a surface scan per the help desk.Well, during the file recovery process (3rd disk out of 5),I got a disk error, and the process was halted.I only recovered half my songs.Great.
Today,I finally got my operating system update in the mail.I put it in,booted up,and got the Godforsaken "Wrong Disk!" message again.Okay, time to send the damn thing in.But before I do,I'd like to know what version you all have.Just hold down stop and play while booting up.Thanks again.
sincerely,
Angry Bastard

Do I know you ? Do you hang out at the Voodoo cafe on monday nights ? Play at the blues jam there on Henderson ?

Hmmm ?

Have you upgraded to Version 1.10?

I had problems with my BR-1600CD CDROM in general, upgraded to Version 1.10 (downloadable from rolandus.com) and the problems with the CD-ROM seemed to go away. Have you upgraded or are you already at Version 1.10?

i use pro media disks

i use pro media disks got them at guitar center. i have had this problem a couple of times just figured it was a write error. how do you back up your hard drive?

I've never had a problem with any type of CDR or CDRW, I ususally buy 50 pack spindles from Walmart.

To the shop!

Well,my Br1600 is off to the shop tomorrow(under warranty,of course).Roland sent me an "upgrade",which was the exact same version that I already had(1.10).Still broke. Now I see that there is a version 2.0.I'll see if the shop can do the upgrade while it's there. This guy has a reputation as a real electronics guru(amps, recorders, pedals etc.),so hopefully I'm in good hands!

ps to denekawa:I backed up my hard drive onto cd-r using the data save/load button.Hit that and pick "hdd"(I think. It's been quite a while).Anyway, you can back up song data that way too.

Never mind, I see it is posted right on Roland's web site.

It came out April 6th.

I've been waiting for this update, but now I am scared to try it.
