Boss GT-6 and Tascam FW-1804

Alright, I am posting this in the Tascam forum as well, so I'm sorry to anyone who has read this twice.

I've got a Boss GT-6 (manual sucks, just in case you have not had the pleasure of reading it...) and a Tascam FW-1804, which I'm trying to run the GT-6 into via the S-PDIF connections. This is what the Boss manual says VERBATIM "Digital signals are output from the DIGITAL OUT connector on the rear panel. You can connect this directly to the digital in connector of a digital recorder or other device and record with no degredation in sound quality." The Tascam manual has no mention of anything related.

So, assuming that I should be able to connect the GT-6 digital out to the digital input on the FW-1804 and get any kind of signal whatsoever, I try it. Nothing. I go to the FW's control panel and arm the S-PDIF to be continuosly streamed and still nothing.

I can't count the times I've read through the manual while "taking care of some business" ( ) and it doesn't mention any way to "arm" the digital output, and I have tried all of the output options under the menu. Does anybody have a clue what's going on here?

Well, there is a two part answer to that. The first part would be the fact that I don't want to climb back behind my desk amongst the fire marshall's nightmare of power cords and interconnect cables to re-route everything (not until this weekend, if i have to...). The second would be to simply satisfy my curiosity on how it would sound. :o And, actually there is a third answer to this. I hate vague manuals. They tell you what it will do, but they might leave out how to make it function. :mad:
 
If you can't configure you're digital out why don't you just use the 1/4" input?
As for the mess behind you're desk...can't help you from here except to tell ya to keep your recording area clear! You never know when you might spill a beer. ;)
 
I think it's a sync problem...

I think I may have figured out why it doesn't work, but I don't really know. I think it may be issues with syncing the GT-6 with the FW. I did a search online for a more in depth manual for the FW and that's pretty much what it said in a round about way. It's getting a signal, but I think that if you have a piece of hardware connected to the S/PDIF input, you either have to be able to run the output back to it, or you have to set the interface to be sync'd externally through the digital in or it won't work. I dunno. Time to start looking for a patchbay...
 
I've got the FW-1884, same digital inputs as your 1804. I am able to connect the digital out (coax) of a CD player to the digital in on the 1884 without any type of external sync. The input levels for the digital input are on bank 3, channels 1 and 2, of my 1884.

What software are you using?

I own the gt-6, the spdif sounds exactly the same as 1/4 outputs. This unit is fairly unable to transmit decent direct sound, distorted amps will sound like crap. Maybe some cab sim other then the one featured in the 6 would do the trick tho. Anyway...

The digital output of the gt-6 is always active, the problem is probably from your tascam
 
Sounds like the bit depth and frequency on the two are different. Unless they match, you won't get anything useable.

Tascam FW-1804 bits/freq settings I think can be controlled using software.

The GT-6 are probably 44.1kHz, 16 bit by default (guessing here).
