Having trouble getting any sounds, should it come directly from unit or does there need to be an external source?
 
Could you be a little more specific? There is a built-in drum sequencer, and you can load measures into it and listen to them, but otherwise it IS a recorder, you record a mic or instrument plugged into it, or use the built-in microphones. Have you read the manual? Get it here
 
Im getting no sound at all I read manual tried drum pad, rhythm tracks, plugged my guitar in......nothing.
