I just ordered my first condensor (SP-B1) and I need a boom stand to be able to record acoustic. I want to keep my cost as low as possible until I can afford a nice studio boom stand.

I'm hoping to get some suggestions for low cost stands that would work for now or even som DIY tips.

Thanks in advance.

I dunno about over there but mic stands cost about £10-£20 from any music shop ... just go buy the cheapest your local has and get going! :)

They're all much of a muchness anyway until you start paying a little extra for ones that are heavy so they don't tip over as easily etc.

Have you looked at any internet music stores like musiciansfriend.com?

Do a search on mic stands there and it will show the prices.

Sheesh.

If you are having problems with it wanting to tip, unscrew the stand from the base and add a couple of dumbells (com'n you work out right? :D) to the stand and assemble the base back on.

That would be too much work getting the dust off the plates!

Actually this was the kind of answer I was looking for. I was worried about tipping. Now I can buy a stand and boom at a decent price and weight it down. Later on I'll buy a better studio boom if I need one.

Thanks!

I've had good luck with Tama stands. One of my Tama mic stands is currently holding a crash cymbal, a splash cymbal, and a 10" Tom without falling over. :D

They run about $50 (US) apiece, so they're not cheap, but the cheapest stands I've found are the Nady stands that fall over with a light wind, and even those junk stands cost almost half that.... Spend the extra few bucks and buy a stand that doesn't suck. It's just not worth the hassle of stands that don't stand up just to save a few tens of dollars.

I ripped it off of someone in the DIY thread, I think they even had a photo. It is a really good idea though. :D

yep, tis what i use when i have my v67's on overhead duty. another problem i run into, though, is with the quality of the boom. if the clutch isn't for shit, the weight of the microphone will cause it to slowly move downwards... better than crashing to the floor, but still annoying if you leave them set up on drums overnight.
