I guess this means I am pretty much going for the "look now" Gear Big Pimpin'! I need to know why I SHOULDN'T cheapo the boom and get a $20 one. I also want to get a pop filter under $100 plz. Help If You can and be nice if you can too :)

BTW I am planning on getting a Studio P TB-1 and I may want to record from overhead with the boom but that doesn't matter. I am pretty tall too. heh :)

Because cheapo boom stands fall over and trash the recording and the mic. You get what you pay for.

Here's an example of some of my mic stands...

AKG KM210/21B tall tripod stand w/stock AKG 42” long arm (4)
AKG KM210/61 standard tripod stand w/stock AKG 31.5” arm (4)
AKG KM201A/2 tripod stand w/AKG KM211/2 22” to 38” arm (8)
Atlas SB36W large boom stand (4)
Atlas MS25E floor stand w/AKG KM211/2 22” to 38” arm (4)
Atlas DMS10E short stand w/AKG KM211/1 18” to 30” arm (4)

Les W- I have done plenty of sessions with the cheapo on stage boom stands and I have not had a single problem with them falling over and "ruining" the session. With that said I am not a pro and I am not tracking every day of the week. The cheap and mid level stands meet my needs.
It all really depends on your intentions. Are you just recording yourself/friends maybe the ocassional client? If this is the case, do you really need to blow hundreds of dollars on stands? How expensive is your other gear? Do you want a $300-400 stand holding up a behringer or Nady microphone? What will meet your needs can only be decided by you.

Just get the ones with the fairly heavy bases. Mine are AT's, I think; they're not 'recording' booms, they're meant for live work, but unless you've got a real heavy mic swinging WAY out, mine wouldn't tip over. I think they were like $30 apiece.

Now, I've got some super cheapos that I wouldn't trust my condensers on.

Pop Filter

Cheapest I've found is a CAD, 18$ at musiciansfriend ( 420373 )

Anyone found cheaper? Let me know.

I like the round based stands better than tripods, the seem to tip over less often. You can also slip a barbell type weight (10 lb) over it and it will never tip!

I also have 25lb iorn weights on my Atlas SB36W large boom stands. ;)

Yeah my pop filter cost me about $0.00

just take a coat hanger and some old panty-hose
bend the coat hanger into a circle and cut the panty hose so you can stretch it over the coat hanger. easy as that.

ps my singer didn't like the fact that he was singing into my Mom's old panty hose though LOL

oh yeah I forgot the duct tape that is used to hold it to the mic stand!

I need something better than the standard OnStage stands for my overheads. Sometimes I want them higher than they will go (safely) with the OnStage stands.

Also, I need half a dozen short rise stands for the drums. Using standard sized OnStage stands are too tall.

The AKG KM210/21B tall tripod stand w/stock AKG 42” long arm go pretty high and if it's not tall enough the Atlas SB36W large boom stand is the ticket. For short stands, the Atlas DMS10E short stand w/AKG KM211/1 18” to 30” arms are great. The above are not cheap stands, but they don't fall over and they should last you a life time. ;)

evhwanabe, you can also make pop filters with needle point rings instead of the coat hanger... and use a clip-on type mic holder to attach it to a mic stand instead of the duct tape. ;)

I solved this problem with a hack-saw. Just cut off however much you need. For what they cost you aren't really hurting anything. I have 3 or 4 that I sawed down to get into tight places. (snare, f-tom, etc..)

I really don't remember what I paid, I've had them a long time. Call Full Compass and ask them.

don't get a cheapo boom...I just broke my second one yesterday. The plastic hinge keeps breaking.

I have a normal tripod stand for the heavy Neumann, but I've put some extra weight to it by a flywheel of a Jaguar engine.

It will never flip over and only a pretty strong guy can carry it.:D

What?

What kind of recording sessions do you guys have? Weights from barbells, flywheels from Jaguars? Are knocking over stands that much of a problem?

Yep! And it's a big problem when there's a $4K+ mic on top of that stand!
