When you have a big condensor on the end of a fully extended boom it doesn't take much to knock it over. When you have a full band in a room it's easy for somebody to trip over a cable or boom leg.
 
I personally think it's worth the investment to go with metal pop filters. Cost around 50 bucks instead of 15...

Something like this??

I need a pop filter, and I'd rather buy once and get a nice one, rather than buy a crappy one and buy twice.
