OK, so i finally got my fatheads last week and have been playing around with the Blumlein setup.

i was wondering, when people use this config do you usually match the gain on the two channels or boost the off axis mic to even it out?
it seems like the lower gain on the off axis mic would contribute to the stereo imaging, but i'm wondering what other's experiences/tips are.

Thanks.

I don't understand your question.

The Blumlein pair is an X-Y pair with figure of 8 pattern mics. Usually both mics would have the same gain, anything else would cause an inaccurate weighting of the image to the side which is louder and not an increase in width.

Both microphones should be 45 deg off axis from the source, and 90 deg from each other, just like a pair of coincident cardioids.

I think the OP was trying to do a mid-side Blumlein variant. Should be interesting at the very least. If so, then the relative gain of the two channels determines the stereo width. More of the "mid" mic gives you a narrower, more mono image, more of the "side" mic gives you a wider spread.

Not heard of it called a Blumlein MS before, but yeah what dgatwood is correct :)
