I have M-Audio's Audio Buddy and it almost always clips the signal. It's a slight clip but I can hear it when I solo the track. Even at a gain knob setting of 8:30-9:00 o'clock I get a slight clip when I zoom in on the wave form. I have to record at about -30-25 dB to prevent this. It's a slight clip where the crest of the peak is not flat but slanted like a trapezoid. The part that is slanted is the only part that's flat. I crudely show the shape below.

That doesn't sound right to me.

What interface are you using? Are you able to set the level of the ins/outs on your soundcard control panel? It sounds as if you might have the input on the interface set a little high?

If it's not that then soemthing else is wrong. the Audiobuddy doesn't have a great rep for sound quality (never used one myself) but I can't believe any company, let alone MAudio would sell a preamp which does that.

Thanks for replying Kevin. I use a RME Fireface and I've tried all the input level settings. It makes no difference what mike I use or if its drums, guitar amp, or vocals. Either the unit is defective or I'm missing something. Anyway, the unit had been moved to the shelf and will stay there.

I friend of mine had an Audiobuddy for moble recording. It doesn't have the greatest sound, but it's a clean sound. I agree that there's something strange going on here or your unit is jsut screwed up somehow....
