yes it is a dynamic. and thats my question is everyone says it and the sm7b are amazing! but they are both dynamic and i dont know if for a powerful rich voice if thats a good thing. they have been used for a lot of people and a lot of stuff but in all my inexperience I have always heard you want to record with a condenser. dumb thing is I am not sure if I know what the actual difference is... you can laugh (I do feel ignorant right now)

The difference is that a dynamic will require better preamps. That's all. $$$$
Anyway, here's an A/B for you.
The first three verses have the AKG C3000 doing the vocals and the Bluebird on tenor guitar.
The last three verses (♫ I wish I was, away in Ingle ♫) have the Bluebird on vocals and the C3000 on tenor guitar.
I have my own opinions but I'll leave you to form your own.
That's the original C3000, by the way. Closer to $500 than $300 in its day and I'm right on top of both mics for vocals and over a foot away for guitar.

I'll only keep that link going for a week or so then I'll put a finished recording of the song in its place.

I sure think that I like the bluebird a lot better on the vocal. and maybe my ear isnt very good yet but I cant hear as much difference in the acoustic but the bluebird seems to have more presence. but it seems like in the end it is preference on the guitar. (but again I am a newbie)

oh and whats the tuning on the tenor guitar?

Trust your ears.
I could afford to back off a couple of inches and I'd get a much smoother recording for it but that is a darn good microphone.
I'd be happy with either of the two on guitar but the Bluebird wins hands down on vocals, to my ear.
Of course, none of this really helps you with the Spark.
Oh, go here Tweak's Guide to the Home and Project Studio
Somebody should have sent you by now.
Our bad!

hehe thanks:) someone might have. I dont want to sound like I am just agreeing with you but i thought the same things about the recording.

hey that link looks like a gold mine too! thank you! I dont have time right now to read the whole thing but I will for sure! thank you!

looked up the tenor guitar and it sounds interesting! I had never heard of it but now I kinda want one just to learn how to play it

The difference it that you have to sing with the dynamic IN your mouth. With a condenser you can look at the mic (cross-eyed) while you record. j/k

Yeah, the better preamp for a dynamic is a given. Without it, they can sound very hollow to me. That sort of missing something, but can't tell what sound.

haha gotcha. looks like I am going to have to look at my budget...lol

There are some dang good preamps that don't cost a whole lot ... to name a few Golden age preamp and the RNP maybe the chameleon.

So I walked into Guitar Center today and they had the Spark in stock! I of course asked to try it out while the place was dead customer-wise and while the sales guy set it up in Pro Tools I took off to find a guitar.

The "studio" in this store worked well for our test being live and open floors with not too much bounce.

Anyway I picked out the best D28 they had and we set the mic up about a foot out from the guitar and aimed for the middle of the body.

I did two takes each of first a fingerpicked tune and then a heavy flatpicked number first take with the focus button off and then again with it engaged.

Playback we both agreed we could hear a slow roll off under 150Hz and a light rise in the 250Hz region. Overall we felt the takes were very usable and had we tried finding a better sweet spot this would have been stunning!

What we both liked was the top end seemed smooth and honest with none of the harsh sound we feared.

For $200 this mic is a great package.

Blah blah blah... For 200? Hell go for the M-179.
Yeah you get ye'r Focus ...and the Spherical Circumnavigator!
Ha!

I'm curious how this fares compared to the m-179 as well, my favorite cheap condensor by a mile. also how it fares compared to a known good but cheap vocal condensor (the mxl v67g).

if the blue spark has more vocal vibe than the m179 does yet is still versatile enough to be used for acoustic guitar (which I've heard proof of it working well for) then I want a blue spark.

the v67g is the only ldc for cheap that has any vocal vibe at all. the m-179 is an absolutely amazing mic but has little if any vibe at all. if the spark has some amount of vibe (I've read one report that it does) for vocals, especially for female vocals which are much trickier to make to a suitable mic imho, then I'm buying one.

cheers

Sorry about double posting this, but there are multiple threads on this mic, and I have a little input, FWIW-

OK- I did get to audition one recently, but only fairly briefly, and not through my own gear. My initial impression is- it sounds like the Bluebird, which I own, and I wouldn't be surprised if much of the circuitry is the same or similar. It's not particularly colored, so I think of it as a "just the facts, ma'am" sort of mic. My voice is fairly high and thin, without a lot of low frequency overtones (like Jonathan Edwards), so when I flipped the high-pass filter switch (whatever they call it) there was no discernable change, except that I lost much of the low frequency rumble from the guy playing bass in the next room.
My short form conclusion- it's not revolutionary, despite the advertising hype, but it is a damn good $200 mic that lacks the characteristic high-mid frequency boost we have come to associate with Chinese mics. I think it does exactly what it intends to do- to be a versatile, uncolored, relatively flat, entry-level condenser, and I would recommend it as a first condenser for those on a budget without reservation. The fact that it comes with a shock mount and a pop filter makes it competitive against anybody's entry-level condenser. I also think that if you own a bluebird, you basically already own one.-Richie
