Totally new here. Can I get opinions on Blue's BlueBird Mic? Is this the best $300 large condenser out there?

Sure. but it is still a $300 dollar condenser. Just like a $300 dollar acoustic guitar is a $300 dollar acoustic guitar.
Save up a bit more and buy the Blue Stage one Rocket.

heh... yeah, I know and point taken... but... if I had a $12 guitar and upgraded to a $100 guitar, my fingers might stop bleeding so much. I'm just trying to get some opinions on whether or not this Bluebird is the best available for that kind of money. Still... I'll check pricing on your suggestion and see if I have a heart attack or not

I thought it was a decent (if not 'typical') mic for strings, distant brass, general acoustic instrumental and instrumental vocal (choir, operatic, etc.) use. Just like most other $300 LDCs...

Not at all the best Ive seen at that price point...$300 is a nice ammount to shop with...I bought a new Shure KSM32 and a new AT4047 for about that price...the Bluebird is pretty...but not quite in the class with Shure and Audio Tecnica

Thanks for mentioning alternatives, darrin. I probably should have clarified that I want to use the mic for close mic'd vocals primarily. Secondarily for acoustic instruments- guitar, mandolin...
Is there something about the Shure KSM32 or the AT4047 that separates them? I have a (too) deep voice, so I need a crispy sounding mic. I prefer to record the vocal (& everything else for that matter) with flat EQ, then add some later only if I have to...

The AT4047 is a soundalike to the u47 ...crisp vocals,,,the KSM32 is more for pretty voices...and any instrument.
