You guys should read the new book "Confessions of a Record Producer"... VERY enlightening!

Confessions of a Record Producer

This book has been available since 1999. It's excellent! I bought it on the recommendation of a close friend in the record industry. While it doesn't cover everything, it by far has the most insightful perspective of this rotten industry we all strive to sink our teeth into. Moses Avalon with his direct-no-bullshit advise is refreshing. COVER YOUR OWN ASS! Period. A true friend and/or serious collaborator will understand that you need to protect your interest in your talent and hard work. Those that wig out at the first word regarding legal matters, are either inexperienced, unprepared, thieves or maybe all three.

Rememebr that if your instrumental sits on your DAT tape, CDR, Hard disc, whatever, its doing absolutley nothing for you. I would rather have 50% of something than 100% of nothing.

Protect yourself and keep writing great music. The sooner you start thinking about your music as a journey and not a single step the better you will be when someone actually wants to publish your material. Don't be afraid to sacrafice some of your interest in your first songs. With a proven track record, you will be sought after and the pay-offs will follow. If you publish nothing for fear that you have to share the copyright, your fooling yourself. The industry is fuled by greed. Get used to it.

Good Luck and God Speed,
MGR
