voice in the wilderness
My Electro Voice Sx100+ speaker is broken. I don't know what is wrong with it except that it's producing a lot of static (along with some sound). I don't know how it happened except I think it was when my daughter's band was using it (with a Mackie 406M powered mixer, which it should be able to handle easily).

These things cost about $350 each (the other one is fine; I do not believe it was plugged in at the time the subject one got fucked up). I don't know how to take it apart, let alone fix it.

What should I do, what should I do?

look up the company and/or call them and order another driver or tweet, whichever is blown. If you can't figure out how to change out a speaker, you need a new hobby...:)

Do you get static from the tweeter and woofer or just one of them? What kind of jacks were you using? You may get lucky and it's just a bad 1/4" connector or something.

Usually a blown tweeter is completely dead and a blown woofer will break up on louder parts and can be a little more tricky to notice depending on how badly it is blown.

Hows that for service?
If they're still under warranty contact the second list of people.:)

Thanks Sub, Tex.

I think it's the woofer and not the horn.

You know, I will take a closer look, but I think those things are sealed shut using some space age technique that is know only to Electro Voice and the Pentagon. Besides, I think I need to spend my free time getting smoothly from an A barre to a D6 11th fret, or at least recording stuff.

Any way I can figure out whether it's just a bad 1/4" connection without performing major surgery?

They are under warranty. You have to send it in.

Notice the part about the "burnt voice coil"
That means if it really got fried you're out of luck. But you will void your warranty if you try to open it or work on it yourself. So your only option is to send it in and see what they say.

Subtractor is the king of blowing warranty covered speakers so you are in good hands.

hehehe...
Yep that's me.
Speaking of which, I need to take all my speakers apart and take in all the blown drivers and tweets in for replacement. I can't wait to see the look on their faces at ultimate when I bring in a whole box full of fused klipsch components.

I guess I should be more careful.

I dunno, the warranty says that it's not applicable to

"(d)
malfunction resulting from misuse or abuse
of the product;"

Sub you sound like a serial speaker abuser.

Does Klipsch have a lifetime warranty? I've got a blown woofer on my home system.

It's just that my amp is so powerful it's really easy to blow shit up. The last incident happened when I didn't have my glasses on, and I was "guessing" at what level I turned it up to. My preamp sounds best at 0, and that's what I was going for but I overshot by about +30, and when the music hit it just about blew the windows out. I always make sure to be able to read the numbers when jamming now.

Tex, Klipsch carry 5 yr warranties.
And they're pretty good about replacing any blown speaker. I've replaced about 6 drivers, 2 horns and a tweet or two already. I'm sure they consider me a problem child, but they haven't heard from me in about 2 yrs so it's about time.

If & when I make contact with sjoko, I'll get him to replace your speaker!!!

LI_Slim,
something doesn't jive here !!

The EV SX100's are 200 watt RMS (continuous) and 800 watt peak speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 Ohms....

The Mackie 406M is rated for 125 Watts/Channel @ 8 Ohms or 200w @ 4 Ohms.

If you (or your daughter) blew an SX100 while connected to the 406M, it was because the speakers were UNDERPOWERED....
It's a common misconception that blown speakers are due to TOO MUCH power, in fact just the opposite.

The SX100's should be powered [at minimum] by an amp [or amps] rated at 300 watts PER CHANNEL. You will not blow the speakers using amps that size as they can handle 800 watts peak. Most amps these days don't warm start... i.e. that start up slowly even at fullvolume, so you don't suddenly hit your speakers with x thousand watts !! LOL

What happened to yours was probably that the 406M was being overdriven and started clipping. Clipping is the self-protect element in the amp that stops it from being fried - it effectively shuts down (albeit temporarily). Speakers make sound by moving back and forth, activated by how much voltage is applied to the speakers coil. If the amp can't increase the output voltage [due to clipping], then the speaker can move no further. Since the amp can't provide enough voltage to move the speaker, the coil simply stops and waits - fully extended or retracted. At that point the AC voltage to the speakers is basically DC current which does nothing more than heat up the coil and acts like a toaster element. This continues until the glue melts or something blows and BL-A-A-M.. There's your blown speaker.

Sorry, long winded I know (and not necessarily totally technically accurate), but mis-matched amp/speaker wattage and the resulting clipping is the MAIN cause of blown speakers..
Knowing this may provide little comfort right now, or bring back your dead SX100, but it may prevent future occurences.

Good Luck. I say that because EV will probably not warranty your blown speaker - they can tell from looking at it as to whether the damage was due to amp clipping (melted glue might kinda give it away) vs a speaker component defect. However, for good will purposes they may decide to honor the warranty. I hope they do.

Regards,
Steve
