Bizarre clipping - help me please I suck at life

So, I'll have the input levels set so that I'm getting a good signal level. Then I get a bizarre distortion. I began to try to compensate for this occurence by lowering the levels even further. I recorded a very faint signal that then too, eventually jumped in volume to a terrible distortion.

Help?

I'm using an m-audio mobile pre USB. While tinkering I found that if I record a mono track the problem isn't as bad, the clipping is much more seldom. It's worst when I have n-track set to stereo > two mono tracks

Sorry but what OS are you on? I believe there were some issues with USB audio that might be your issue. Try upgrading your service pack.

I'm on XP, 1.79 Ghz and skimpy on the RAM. Someone mentioned that memory might be a problem. Should I upgrade RAM?

If not, then what?

I would say it is the onboard soundcard. I had all sorts of problems till I upgraded. The onboard card is not made for recording.

I'm not using an onboard soundcard though, I'm using an M-audio mobilepre

Upgrading RAM couldn't hurt, but RAM issues don't cause clipping.

Give me your entire signal chain and where levels are set when you are recording. We will go from there.

Ibanez acoustic through fishman pickup direct into mobilepre, set the mobilepre gain (as per maker instructions) to where my loudest playing doesn't cause the clip LED to blink.

Audio Technica midnight blue straight into the mobilepre, likewise for the 2nd gain knob on the mobilepre.

i have the same sound card and same exact problems, it must be the cheap pre-amps. Thats the only thing i can think of since I have used it on both my comps and they are both very high quality.

Indeed. Beginning to wish I'd taken other people's advice and bought a digital multitrack. :(

No probs here

I use the Mobile pre with N-track and have no problems.
I have 512 RAM, that may be your problem.

You may also have too many devices going in, possibly creating signal noise?

I run direct line guitars into a Zoom 505 for guitar and a 506 for bass direct to the mobile Pre, it works great.

maybe you need an update for either your OS or the M-audio driver.

If you post an actual raw clip, I can see if its in the playback or from the tracking. That may help narrow it down.
