hello, guys

My girlfriend just reminded today that her birthday is coming up next week ( I totally forgot about it). As a routine, I gotta make a song for that every year. So,I skipped my classes and quickly recorded this. It's not finished, but I would like to get some quick opinion on the song writing and mixing. Right now the lead vocal sounds funny, I'm having a hard time nailing the cause. Some lowcut perhaps, I dunno...

Nice .... weird jazzy stuff!

The "boo-dup" vocals can be more to the background IMHO.

The lead vox sounds ok to me... certainly suit to the feel of the song. :)

That was very creative! I do like the finger snaps! What kind of voice processer do you use? If that's what I think i hear right around 2/3rds of the way through the song....Cool...hope she likes it!!

i think it's pretty cool actually.

did you just think up the song on the spot? it sounds something that someone would just impulsively write. i like it, very original.

did you play all the instruments in the background too?

the finger snap was me in front of an AT4041. It sounded really bad when I was doing it right in front of the mic, but when I moved my snapping finger about 1-2 inches above the moc, it really shined.

That radio-like voice is just some EQ's preset, telephone, which cuts everything but mids-highmids, and some compression. I'm glad no one has found that effect inappropriate for this song yet:)

I started the "ah boom" phrase on the bus on my way home, and improvised the rest as I was recording. I think what's helping the "impulsive" feeling is that I didn't grab my guitar or keyboard when I wrote this, so that kinda breaks me away from my usual song-writting formula. The drums were done in fruity loops, saxphones done with Roland XP30.

I think adding some more instruments would be helpful. :)

I like the 'fan-pan' chorused vocal, that's working good.

i reckon build up the drums, maybe even a little bassline, but don't do any more then that. i like the feel at the moment, and i think a solid rhythm section with guitars would ruin that.

a piano playing riffs here and there would be good.

if possible, i would add more sax stuff actually. but if it's not a real sax, too much may make it sound crap.

i love mandarin singing. (if it was in cantonese, i could understand though!). i wouldn't mind writing a song similar to that one day, but i probably have to get better at singing first.

I will try to balance it out when adding more instruments without over-doing it. It's always tough to fight the temptations!

I'm guilty as charged. I did have that song stuck in my head when writing this. But, hey, at least I was in jeans and t-shirt, sitting on my chair:) Most of the lyrics don't mean a thing, but here it is:

hello there! It's good to see another chinese on board:) I totally agree with your suggestions, will work on that. This style of singing is actually pretty easy. Even a terrible singer like myself thought it wasn't too bad, more like talking:) Looking forward to hear your stuff!

I have no idea what the hell you just said, but that was prety damn cool. Not your typical birthday song, which is cool because I don't typically like much of anything typical. Was that really Chinese?

Sure, well, half of it is just mumbling:D I know this doesn't sound like the stereotypical chinese you would hear in kung fu flicks, but do you happen to speak or understand chinese??

A very original birthday tune!

I wonder if people will be doing this one in restaurants 50 years from now like the other famous birthday tune?

The length is about perfect as birthday tunes are traditionally short and sweet.

Another inimitable song from Studiovols. Very quirky. I like it. Short but sweet.

Nice vox. Good mix, IMO.

Not quite sure what to do with it. It just makes me scratch my head... :-) That's good though. There's not enough head scratching in the world these days.
