I'm well into the bips and clicks that loads of people are starting to use now for their percussion sounds. Bands like Mum use it often, Wilco have had a little go, and I recently found a compilation called "Bip hop generation" on iTunes that have nothing but clicks and weird electronic noises.

I WANT TO HAVE A GO! But I haven't a clue how to achieve the sound effectively. Are there any AudioUnit/VST instruments that I could use? Or do I pass a percussion sound through effects?

If anyone could give me any pointers, it will be very welcome. Cheers!

I love my blips and clicks too. I generate weird percussion sounds mainly by chopping up samples, pitch shifting, filtering and throwing drum envelopes on them. I don't really use any conventional drum machines, but I believe you can get very blippy with the YamahaRY30, a machine that tends to come up on eBay pretty cheap.

Steinberg's Bitcrusher (plugin that comes with cubase) can turn any percussive sample into electronic percussion if you tweak it. Gating stuff really extremely fast can also create cool stuff. Try filtering simple white and pink noise also.
