How do you go about getting a big powerful, thick drum sound? Are there any tried and true methods? Right now I have a pretty cheap set up but I was wondering if there is a way to utilize what I have to get a good drum sound. The mics I am using are the entry level Nady drum mics (2 DM-80 kick mics and 4 DM-70 tom/snare mics). Im going to get two audio technica atm-10a omnidirectional condenser mics in the mail soon that I plan on using as overheads. Im also getting a Roland VS-2480 in a couple weeks to hook all these into. I've done a few test recordings with the Nady mics going through an 8 channel PA mixer and out of the mixers tape out jack to a Boss b-r8 digital 8-track. All my results sounded thin and tinny. all of the nadys were close mic'd. Is there a way to get a good sound with what I have? Does my PA mixer cause for shitty sound, or is it the br-8 just my placement? I know I'm just using entry level mics but is there a way to get a good sound from them? Will the omni directional condenser mics I'm getting improve the sound or should I get a couple of unidirectional sm-57's instead? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Im a newbie at this.

For starters, back off the mics a bit to give the sounds some room to develop...some nicer mics would definitely help....an AKG D112 on the kick along with your dm70's on snare and toms and the condensers as overheads.....

Recording in a good room is always a big help too.....

I will try backing the mics away from the drums next time.

Thank you for the links tekker.

From what i've been reading, ive been doing everything so far backwards. I guess I need to wait till I get those condensers and get a good sound from those and then worry about all the close miking after I get a sweet overhead sound. Am I right?
