I picked one of these up for $30.00 at a pawn shop today. It sounds a very low-fi. Im sure its not working right (I hope). Do you all think its the ribbon or maybe something else? I think I hear something moving around inside as well, under the grill.

Thanks

It's going to have a low output compared with other mics, that is normal. However the 'moving around' sound is not. It may mean that the ribbon is sagged badly, and when it hits the magnets, it makes a loud pop.

A reribbon will run about $125, which is still a great deal for this mic.

Or if you are ambitious, you can reribbon it yourself. I ain't gonna lie, this is difficult, but with some practice can be very satisfactory. Worst case scenario is you send it off to be reribboned anyway.

Do you mean you hear something moving when the mic is unplugged? If so, that's not a sagging ribbon - it's just something loose. I have an M500 and an M69 with the same issue.

You DO have to crank up the trim for most ribbon mics!

The M260 was designed as an announcer's mic, so it's not going to provide the amazing sound of a Coles, Royer, AEA, or good RCA. But it can yield a useful sound for some things.

I found out that the suspension is just shot. The magnet, etc. was just shifting inside the body. The sound has a true lack of low end. Im sure its not right. I will call Mr. Sank and see about sending it in.

Thanks
