I'm tempted to go all the way and get a Goldpoint or Coleman, XLR needed, and would love to hear quality budget suggestions. What are you guys using aside from mixers and are you happy with the results?

I'm using a Mackie Big Knob (~$350). Samson makes C-control that's around $100. Then there's the Presonus Central Station that's up around $500 I think.

I'd "probably" suggest the Central Station on a budget - 1/4" TRS.

Most bang for the buck. Very happy former owner.

Although if you don't need the conversion, I would imagine the Coleman might be more up your alley...

damn I am thinking you could make a pot connected to some jacks and rackmount it or something for like $10. I just use a mixer or my software.....

You could do that...

It'd probably sound kinda crappy, but you could do it.

And the NHT is pretty cool - I've heard a few complaints on QC recently, but I'm sure that's relatively rare with them.

John aren't you using the Avocet now?

How is it working out?

It's like... The perfect volume control...

Almost perfect... I wish it would combine like the CS's "A or B plus C" switching (as I run my sub in parallel) but then I realized that the power control is right in front of my face.

Otherwise - Goodness, what a well though-out unit...

The converters are about as good as any I've heard, the switching, the "no tools" temporary quick calibration options...

I never thought I'd say it about a volume knob, but the function & flexibility has actually changed the way I work. Mostly concerning "A/B'ing" - I know, real exciting... Still, it rocks hard.

I'd love to put a BLUE knob on it though... ;)

Actually, I'm scheduled to be "doing coffee" at Crane Song next Friday... I wonder if they have any other knobs lying around...

Then you can say you have a modded Avocet! :)

When speaking to Dave or Scott could you ask them if it's possible to change the level reading from peak to RMS? Actually I think it would be great to have a mod that would include a switch to go between the two, perferably based on the K system. But then I'm asking too much.

I believe the only way to change the readout is a jumper from pre to post...

But I could ask...

That would be great, BK once told me that they may possibly perform the peak reading to RMS mod. For me, an RMS meter reading is more critical at the monitoring stage. I was thinking about the Nautilus Commander for this reason.

Why's that?

As long as you pay attention to the loads, you can't get lower distortion than passive...

I was just referring to a $10 stereo potentiometer not being as nice as a NICE stereo potentiometer. I haven't heard too many cheapies that are well calibrated - especially at lower levels.

If budget is the key...

Gemini Sp-1 is a great volume knob... has a subwoofer output, and a second set of full range outputs... trim pots for the outputs, and a white noise generator. All inputs are xlr...

bought mine at musicians friend for $20, 3 years ago.

couldn't be happier, this way i can use the headphone amp of my choice, and as far as talkback is concerned, small single mic input mixer

I have never experienced good results with all in one boxes, they all seem to try to do too many things, and fall short too often...

however this setup

I use a Mackie 1202VLZ PRO mixer. I have a Delta 44 which allows you to route two inputs directly to two outputs, so I have my main pre (Great River MP2) going into these Delta inputs, and I take the outputs into two channels on the Mackie. This essentially splits my pre's output so I can setup a custom monitor mix of the two channels while tracking w/o affecting the signal being recorded (custom pan, reverb, whatever the performer wants). Oh, and and I have the other two Delta outputs sending whatever the PC is playing out to a stereo channel on my board, which allows me to send this signal to either my monitors (plugged into the Mackie's master out) or headphones (board's 3/4 bus). Works very well for me!
