i have a AT 4040, 2 sm 57s and 2 sm 58s... i have doin a few recordings with bands.. marshall 2x12.. a peavey stack, marshall stack... ive gotten some ok sounds.. but want to do better.. ive usually been using a sm 57 close up.. about 1 inch from speaker...any tricks or ideas that could get a " bigger" sound from a guitar? maybe a trick that involves stacking pillows.. or somethin like that?

Two 57s in stereo on the cab and the 4040 at least a couple feet back somewhere in the room should give you all the size you could want if your room is decent. Or just the 4040 ~ a foot back and a 57 at an angle on the grill. Those are a couple I would try, anyway.

Agreed

Double mic, Double track and move that 57 closer to the grill.
I have gotten the best sound from mine by having it almost touching the grill, facing the edge of the cone on a slight angle...

FWIW...

back off on the distortion and go for a bit more punch...

double track and pan hard left and right...

track with the 57 and 4040... mix the 4040 a bit heavier than the 57

low pass at 6k

hi pass at 80Hz

scoop to taste between 400Hz and 2K
