Beta SM58 or Beta SM57 for vocals?

I have a beta SM58 that i use for live vocals , some would argue that the 57 is more smoother for vocals.

I always thought the 57 was more for instuments.

Has anyone here used the 57 for live vocals and how have you found it to be?

I like the 58 but it does sound slightly harsh and nasely.

Yeah, but they don't, any more than a 57 and 58 sound the same. The shape of the grill and the fact that in the 57, the diaphragm is closer to the grill account for the differences. At least according to Shure. As always, it depends on the person's voice and mic technique whether either one sounds better.

For what it's worth, I too over time have found that the Beta 58 isn't my favorite. It does work very well in loud crowded mixes and on loud stages, but falls a bit short in general IMO when you can actually hear the details.

I don't care for either of the Beta mics. I prefer the regular old sm57 on vocals over the 58. More natural and honest sounding IMO. The Sennheiser 835 would be a good choice as well.

because he said they are the same mic or because they should sound the same??? Internally, they are the same. The only differance is in the grill...as mentioned earlier which is where the different sound comes in.....

I would think the Beta 57 would be better for recording purposes but then again it's easy enough to get a grill for a 58 and swap them back and forth.

A sound engineer friend I know feels that the beta SM57 is a thinner sounding mic.
I have yet to try one.

By the way I go back on what I said about the Samson Q7 although it is a nice sounding mic for the price.
At first i was quite excited and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread but after working with it and comparing it with the Beta SM58, the Beta 58 has more detail and bite although still a bit harsh.

yeah i suspect so to.... i thought most people knew that the diaphrams in the things were the same..... and everything else. only difference is grill shape and placement. but yes, the DO sound different.

The Beta57 and Beta58 have interchangable grills. They are the same mic internally.

The frequency response for the SM57 is 40-1500 Hz, whereas the SM58 is50-1500 Hz for the SM58. Overall, I prefer the 57 on vox, snares and instrument sources. I also prefer it's flatter grill design.
