Bet you've heard this one before . . . PREAMPS!

I'm looking for an 8 channel preamp under $300. Doesn't need to sound awesome, just needs to have decent noise levels and be fairly warm. Ones I'm looking at now:

SMPro Audio PR-8 II 8 Channel Mic Preamp

ADA8000 Ultragain Pro-8

Now how would I use a preamp in conjunction with my mixer to get the most channels and the most functionality? I'm going to be recording a jazz band live pretty soon, and my 6 channel Behringer Mixer won't cut it. I'm just wondering how I could connect a preamp and a mixer to the same Fostex VF-80 and record live. Also, same question, but for n-Track studio. Please don't crucify me, I don't know a whole lot about preamps and all the connections I can/cannot make.

I looked at the Fostex website and it looked like the VF-80 has 2 inputs, using either XLR or 1/4" connections. I'm not sure you need an 8 channel preamp, if you can only use two at a time.

Do you know how many tracks it will record simultaneously ?

Just one. You can't arm more than one track on the Fostex. That's why I'm sort of moving away from the idea of getting a preamp (maybe I'll pick up a smaller one along the way) and maybe getting an extra mixer, so I could use the Behringer 4-channel one as a submixer for drums, and run everything else straight into an Alesis 8-channel or something along those lines.
