P.S.

some of you are geographically challenged because last time I checked, new york state(where I'm from) wasn't located on the west coast.

to those of you with knowledgeable answers and earnest responses, thank you... to the rest of you, thanks for wasting my time with your incoherent rambling!

WOW. When I posted the thread I had no idea it was going to start some huge argument.

First of all, to all you morons who assume someone is rich because they have nice equipment, learn to hold your tongue because some of us work for the things we have. My drummer bought that drum with his own hard-earned money when he was 16 years old. Every single person in my band has literally bought every single piece of their own equipment, with their own money. we take great offense to anyone who says otherwise.

all I wanted to know was how to get the best sound out of the snare.

To all the others who say the drum sounds horrible, way to judge something before you've ever even heard it in person.
Because those drums are hand-made, every single one has its own unique sound. Besides that, all drummers tune their drums differently and get different sounds out of them. So, you're all making very naive statements.

also, the snare sounds AMAZING live. nearly every single sound tech who has rigged up his drums for live performances has said so. unfortunately, it DOES NOT sound so great in the studio, which is why I came here for help.

I have to say, there is some great information/people on this site, but some of you people are just plain retarded.

What you aren't getting is that they arent hand made. they buy the shells from keller.... a 10 ply keller shell costs $45, and two put together (into 20 ply) costs about $100. And maybe at MOST $250 in hardware... so at most, that snare can be made for about $350... and maybe at most $100 for getting it vented... (which is a huge exxageration)... so tops $500.
No matter how hard your drummer worked for that snare... he got fucked.

and also...fyi...im 16 years old (not even, 15.5) I play DW collectors drums, paiste signature cymbals and ocheltree/sonor/pork pie/yamaha snares and i buy it all with my own money

...wow... you have the ocheltree snare? and what sonor do you have? Thats so cool... I'm guessing you have been playing for a while.

ya...im friends with jeff....

I am gettin 1 of the 4 Spirit or 2002 8x14s in the world (danny carey has 2 of the 4), and he has given me a couple of his new Steel drums that are coming out within the next couple of weeks. I also have 2 pork pies, and yamaha Birch custom absolute 6.5x14, and as of yesterday, a 6.5x14 Sonor Signature Ferro snare with parallel strainer

....

Great snares, I was thinking of getting an ocheltree, when I get the cash for one anyway (and after convincing my wife that I need another drum) :D

Earlier, I was just trying to make a point to dubsnack, not brag. I'm just saying there are people of all levels here, just trying to open his/her mind to the world around us. I work hard for what I have, I am proud of what I accomplished.

Good luck to you all!

Considering that you can't expect anyone to sell anything for less than a 100 percent markup........well you can, but it's unrealistic considering the society we live in........so considering ocdp's cost for the shells and what they pay their employees, 300 to 350 bucks is probably pretty realistic......so at 100 percent markup that's a 700 dollar snare, then considering the dealers 100 percent markup, it's a 1400 dollar snare. though the dealer should have been willing to make a deal. As long as you have even a basic understanding of capitalism, I don't see how you can say that he got fucked. Yeah, as long as he had access to some basic woodworking and painting tools (and he did considering he's in highschool and could have taken woodshop) he could have made it for about 3-400 bucks, but then he would have risked screwing up the bearing edges and possibly other things.

Basically, I'm saying that you sound more jealous of his abilty to pay as much for his snare as you did for your whole kit. I am too, but there's no reason to try to make him feel bad or stupid for working hard and buying the things he wants.

No, he's saying that OCDP are way over priced, which is exactly what I said a few posts earlier.

Consider it another way.........there are a number of other majors brands using Keller shells that can do it for a (virtual) fraction of what OCDP charge and then you have the likes of DW who mostly make their own shells and have to cover the additional costs involved..........doesn't matter which way you come at it, OCDP's pricing is wrong.
