here is what i have:
1) line 6 spider stack
2) sm57
3) studio p. c1
4) focusrite trakmaster

what should i put where?
what mic gets the pre amp?

i'm using a q10 aardvark, which has pretty good pre's as well
thanks a-lot to all you great audio engineers!!

you really have to mess around to get the best sound. For starters, put the 57 up close to the best sounding speaker in your stack and have the c1 about 2-4 feet back away from the amp.

thanks guys,
should i put the amp in an inclosed room, or will it be better to record in a big open room?
Since i have only one preamp, what mic should i give it to. I'm thinking maybe the 57 since it is the main mic in my set up?

again, thanks for the main ideas on what i will be looking for. I will definitly experiment,
but this gives me a good idea on where to start.

I would put it in a smaller room, I tried to record a marshall in a big room and it didn't sound quite good to me, but having a mic with a narrow pickup pattern helps cancel out some of the room noise a little.

Its best to have a pre on all mics. Your C1 will need phantom power. It will without a doubt need a pre.

Do you have a mixer available? What pre are you using?

i have an aardvark q-10 it comes along with 8 mic pres, and channels 1-4 have phantom power.
aside from that i have a FOCUSRITE trakmaster which has a little bit better of a pre amp.
do you still think i should give the c1 the Focusrite trakmaster?

close mic with a 57, 2' back with the c1 mix to taste. (experimtent, experiment, experiment)

i would use the 57 through the trackmaster, as it will probably be the more dominant source in the mix, and a dynamic mic will aprreciate a good pre more than a condensors would. however, sometimes a 57 through a nasty pre when recording a guitar amp can be golden
