Just because...

I like my DOD FX-17. Very adjustable and because of the way it works it never gets scratchy pots. Its is kind of an oddball, though. I wish they still made them.

The Dunlop Crybaby gargles & cries. It's a brick & simple too. Pot noise is an issue but can be dealt with.
Plug one in, plug it into an overdriven amp, click it on, rock right back on the pedal & play a few barre chords - you'll know what I mean then.

I haven't tried any of the other wahs, but I really really like my VOX V847 reissue. Got it quite cheap too, about €60...

Good luck, I personally don't think you could go wrong with one of the 'standard' wahs, like the Cry Baby or the VOX.

Good luck!

I'd just like to say i'm absolutley disgusted with the lack of build quality & longevety of Jim Dunlop's wah. Yes it sounds great, yes i love using it. How many times do the feet have to fall off or the rubber bits opposite the switch fall off before JIMMY the wah maker finally designs something that doesn't evapourate at the slightest touch? It's as if he's saying "ah you like my effect do you, good got 'em hooked bring 'em in (no need to change the rotten lure)".

Cockhead

Sorry, had to be done, the worst wah was probably boss's version - at least it wouldn't explode while you think about using it though.

Crybaby!

I've got a Dunlop Orginal Crybaby and a Mister Crybaby on my pedal board. I use the original for higher end effect and the Mr. for more of a midscoop wah and volume swells. I've had the Original since 98 and the Mr. was a purchase from eBay about a year and a half ago for $8.00. Originally purchased in the mid 90s (according to the seller) I replaced the floor plate and rubber feet, cleaned the guts (was a bit dusty) and it works like a charm.

EDIT - For clearity, I replaced the floor plate and feet because they were not included with the auction. I've never had any problems with the rubber feet, floor plates, battery covers, knobs, buttons, switches, etc. Course I don't throw it around either.... :D I keed, I keed.

well i take very good care of my stuff due to the fact i may want to sell stuff in the future. which i have done (my ebay id is the same as this one)(and this is not an advert i'm not selling anything on ebay for a long long time now) and you will see by the stuff i've sold i keep it in great shape. This is impossable with the jim dunlop wah, i had the jimi hedrix special ed it had problems, i've now got the one with the telecaster style knob on the side (cant remember mod numbers). I very rarely use these as a wah effect i tend to leave the wah open to highlighty a certain frequency like a notch filter. So the previous poster must be lying or very lucky, or own a jim dunlop museum dedicated to the build quality of the crybaby. Wake up everybody know's they are craply built. Why do you think that jim dunlop give you a handy slip along with effect giving you codes for ordering replacement parts etc?

"highlighty" wasn't meant but the more i read it the more i like it :D

I had one of the original Vox versions I purchased around 1966. It worked great. I recently sold it on EBay as I went away from stomp boxes towards rack/POD gear.

hey.... I'm stuck between getting a wah pedal. Theres a few at my disposal... I guess I'll put up a pole. Please comment on the ones you think are quality

I like simulating the crybaby with my GT-8. I had a hard time growing up getting one to sound satisfying to my ear. Keep trying them out and don't settle!

what are the main differences between the crybaby & the vox wah, i've never tried one. Range, tone etc?

Yes, because I feel the need to lie about the reliability of the equipment that I own...... ;)

Wah

I second the Teese wahs. Best wah around and some of the wah's allow you to change a few switches and trim pots to manipulate the character of the wah for your specific sound.

uh.....ok, I guess having a Dunlop product hold-up longer than a year is a damnable offense now?

I had a fender fuzz wah that was really cool. It had 2 little sidecars for the switches (wah and fuzz) and the foot pad rotated side-to-side for volume. It had an elaborate system of strings and pulleys that made it work. I loved it for volume because you could see how much you have left. The strings got screwed up and it quit working so i pitched it. I wish I would have kept it. I could have fixed it and ebayed it for a gazillion dollars maybe.

I use a dunlop crybaby at the front of the signal chain. You have to have the wah before the fuzz. It's a shit piece, as was said, and the battery is taped in it now and the hinge is too loose and I have to stomp on it a few times to turn it on or off. It has a decent sound, but it colors the sound just having it in the signal chain (no true bypass). But it was like $60 or something and I could replace it any saturday afternoon at samash/GC if I had to.

I had an old VOX that died from carpet lint, too. It was a total piece of crap, but sounded just like Prince's solo in "let's get Crazy".

I really like the Cry Baby's apart from one thing...

The big problem I have is the 'on/off' switch. I have 2 of the things now, and with both you really have to stomp the fuck out of them to get it in and out of bypass. I have to blu tac a penny to the switch.

Edit: I should add that neither have crapped out on me and they work fine. I don't mind having to stomp the shit out of it so much because I know they can take it. These things are built like bricks. :) I don't feel any need to lie about that.
