Best vocal mic for under $200?

hey i was wondering which vocal mic would be best for under $200...

i was checkin out the audio technica 3050, the rode nt-1a, and the studio projects c-1.

Depending on the voice, the MXL v67g might be the one for you, and it's only $100, or less! ;)
 
Mic for Vocals

I use Rode mics a lot for vocals. They were highly recommended by another audio guy. I use them on a lot of other instruments as well. I have used the NT1 for about 2 yrs and have never had a problem. I use it with a so-so tube preamp with good results. I prefer the rode any day over the Marshall and the other various mics that I use.
 
also...would the oktava mk-319 be good also...being that its $100...would it be the best value?

right now i have the mc-012-01...n im pretty happy with how they sound...i tried them on vocals, sounds pretty good....but tend to pop a lot. should i jus get a new vocal mic or jus stick with this one and try to mess around with the positioning to get rid of the popping? or would gettin a vocal mic not even make a difference popping wise...?
 
Oktava's quality control is poor, although I think the MC-012's
are better made than the 319's and 219's.
Personally, I like the one you have over the other two generally.

If you have a boom style mic stand, raise the microphone to the
singer's forehead level, with it pointing towards their mouth.
I'm assuming you're using a mesh pop screen also BTW.
Try it that way and hear how you like the sound or not.

That Oktava is on somewhat on the dark side :) of neutral.
If you like an unhyped sound like that, you'd want to consider
the Studio Projects B1, which is a bit brighter than a MC-012,
yet still pretty neutral.

Small diaphram condensers are prone to popping when close miking, however, with careful postioning you can get a good recorded sound.

$200 and under -- my favorites:

* Studio Projects C1 if you like a brighter, more polished-sounding mic.

* CAD M177 if you want something smooth, rich, and more on the neutral side.

* Shure SM-57 with a pop screen for something a little less polished, and more on the midrangy side of things.
 
The CAD M179 is at 199 from 8thstreet. Now there's a sweet SWEET deal.

I tried an NT1-A the other day. Alto sax, not vocals, unfortunately, but it struck me as a good bit more usable than the NT1s I remember from a while ago. Cleaner, still hyped, but controlled. I don't like it better than the M37, though, or a B1/B3...but I didn't have those, and we were using the nice mic (tlm103) on vocals that day, so NT1a it was, and it wasn't bad.
 
i like the NT-1 nice and bright.

MK 319 dark and less detailed.

sm57 midrangy and cheap.

sm58 pretty close to the 57.

of the three my favorite is the 57. but depending on what you want out of the vocals i also really like the other two. for well under $200 - maybe around $150 - you can get both the 319 and the 57. you'll have a nice warm sound from the 57 and a darker tone for the 319. with the remaining $50 you can get a stand and a pop-guard, or if you have the stands get the stedman metal grill pop-guard - super transparent and cool looking!
