Best version of Cubase?

Just wondering what's the best version of cubase? I want to use this program to edit wav files from the Boss Br 1600.

depends what you need (how many audio/midi tracks you plan to record...and so on). what is your current setup and your intended uses for the software?

I think this is a good question because I've often considered upgrade? I bought SX1.06 and although I admit that I'm not an expert, Nik makes a valid point.

The hottest & latest SX3 has a boatload of stuff that I probably don't need right now and maybe there's a couple of things that would be cool to have, I wonder if the financial investment of upgrading is worht it?

So I operate by the simple philosophy of "IF IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT"
If you currently don't use Cubase and you're wondering what version to buy, then the answer is clear, get the latest version.

The SX series is FAR better than the VST versions, so any of the SX ones are recommended, although the latest is obviously the most powerful......

New versions add more features, but thats not the only reason to buy them. Often times a new version will also add more efficeint and/or better sounding algorithms. However, if the version is TOO NEW, it may be buggy.

If it is just for editing wave files, you don't need it. If it is for multitracking (midi / softsynths + audio), then you need it.

What version depends on your needs. To begin with Cubase SE will do. It is a cut down version of SX1. Has most things you need.

Yeah (but) what one only needs today certainly changes tomorrow as I'm sure you know so well. As you get more comfortable with a program, you start seeing things you want to do and alas your current program doesn't support it. So then you're looking at shelling out cash for upgrades and more upgrades. If Easternstorm ONLY wants to edit wave files today, I'll bet he's gonna branch out down the road and if he's got nothing now, he should probably go for the gusto and get SX3. He'll thank us ...

Steinberg has very fair upgrade pricing. In fact, it's cheaper to buy SL, and then upgrade to SX (only by $1 ) than to buy SX outright.

How about downloading a free program like audacity 1.2.3. I don't know if it works with your boss br 1600. But hey it's free so you can't really go wrong.

DON'T GO BY ANY VERSION OF CUBASE if all you want to do is edit wav files.

On my mac I run Cubase VST 5.0 and the wav editing is sooo bad, i mean sooo bad I found myself editing the raw file individually with Peak TDM which edits mono and and stereo files very very well.

Depending on what kinda machine your using, "Peak" by bias is just what you need or of your running a PC try finding a copy of "Cool Edit".

The main point here is... if you by DAW software just for editing audio files you'll be going overboard and wishing someone told you ahead of time.

I appologize to any cubase guys, he had to be told the truth.

VST and SX are two COMPLETELY different animals, as I've already pointed out..... VST is awful, SX is excellent........

I suggest you research your "truth" a bit more thoroughly before you post next time.......

I agree with Blue Bear 100% on this. Steinberg should not have called Cubase SX anything with the wrod "CUBASE" in it. Too many users seem to think that SX is an upgrade to VST. It was a complete and utter rewrite. In my opinion the feature set and coding are about as different as microsoft Paint and Photoshop. Or better yet Photoshop and Nuendo

Anyhow, Cubase may not be as slick a 2 track editor as Audition, Sound Forge or Wavelab... But I have finally started learning some tricks in it and it really isn't all that bad. I have Sound Forge, but I started learning basic two track editing in Cubase just so I wouldn't have to keep switching and importing. It really isn't that bad. But then again, not my first choice if ALL I was doing is 2 track editing.
