what is the best software for mixing, mastering, recording, eq-ing, effecting, sampling, everything - that still works on windows 2000???

There is no best, only the most you can afford with the money you have available.

Well my advice is, do your homework, choose one and stick with it.Otherwise you'll be like me...confused with 3 different softwares  and still trying to learn another one.

Anyone wants an M-box? Or Cakewalk home studio? :D

There are many too choose from, its finding out which one is for you. Whether you want something inexpensive or expensive.

Heres a few that work with Windows 2000
For "mixing, recording, eq'ing, effecting"
:Pro Tools LE 5.1.1 (w/ Digi 001)
:Cakewalk Sonar (Producer Recording / Home)
:Cubase SE / SL
:Tracktion 2
:Abelton LIVE

For "mastering (and editing), samplers"
T-Racks 24 Mastering
Steinberg Wavelab Essential Mastering
Steinberg WaveLab Audio Editing & Mastering
Sony Sound Forge 8 Audio Editing & Mastering

Propellerhead Reason
Cakewalk Kinetic Electronic Music Studio
Steinberg Hypersonic Virtual Music Workstation

I always have to tell people to go w/ Tracktion2, it's simplicity and features make it very powerful and fast paced. Also if you go to the KVR forums to suggest a fix or feature the developer of the program will usually be the one to respond to you.. doesn't get any better than that.

What's the best vehicle for off-road, going to the store to get milk, towing a camper, taking the kids to school, hauling lumber, commuting in traffic, drag racing and gets good gas mileage - that can be still driven on a standard driver's license?

They all do. Which one is best for you? Only you will know.
