Take a look at the Studio Projcets SP828 - Having never used one, I can not give an impression, but I've heard great things about it and PMI Audio is selling B-stock units for $450, which seems like a steal.

I use the Focusrite Octipre to record my drums with Audix,Senns,AKG,and Shure mics. and I get great sounding drums I also use Shure's and Rodes for guitar and vocals and the results are amazing in my opinon this is the best bang for the buck I send the signals thourgh the litepipe to my alesis HD also has dedicated line level inputs I love mine. :D

He wants a preamp, not an interface.

If you update it to the latest version of the firmware, it can also be used as a stand-alone 8 channel pre....

Just think of it as buying a great 8-channel pre and getting an 8-channel FireWire interface for free. :D
