I have a Ernie Ball Sillhoette that came stock w/ H/S/H pickups. I am replacing the pickgaurd unit with one that is S/S/S like a standard Strat. I am looking for recommendations. I would like something humbucking, but not at the expense of great quack and single coil tone. I'm NOT looking for a blues tone at all. I am looking for a sweet single coil tone that's not too weak or too strong. Think Dominic Miller or Mark Knopfler.
I'm leaning toward DiMarzio HS-2's with a coil tap so I can have bucking or non. What have you tried? What do you like? What do you think sucks?
Pickups are the great unkown of guitar-dom. Help me out here.

Seymour Duncan's vintage replacement pickups will do thejob nicely, but I think you may have to forego the humbucking function - they do sound great, tho!

Check out Bill Lawrence 280's. They are "stacked humbucker" type pickups and sound great with distortion. Also are Kinman pickups, they are the stacked humbucker type too. They seem to be more strong than the Lawrence 280's but they also cost about three times as much. I would say go with the Bill Lawrence 280's, they are not to weak and not to strong and they are at a great price. I've never heard a bad review of them. I have both sets and would never use anything else. You can also call Bill Lawrence (who is also a consultant for Fender) and talk to him about what you want, If he doesnt have it, he can make it. Oh, he also makes those "rail" pickups, and single coil size P90 type pickups. Check with him, he surely has what you want at a price you cant beat.

try the pickup reviews at harmony central..they can be helpful in getting an idea about the flavor of a pickup

As much as I dislike everything else they make,I've come to really like the Lace Sensor Golds, the original ones, not those noise cancelling ones. They have a bell like clarity to them that really works for clean Strat tones.
