Im looking for the best recording software for under or around $150. I currently am using Magix 10 Music maker and I dont like it because it skips while recording which really sucks. I have a /Berhinger mixer, and line 6 toneport for hardware. I am asking about software because I think that it is the problem, but I am not totally sure. any ideas.

I don't think it's your software that's causing skipping. Check your manual, it's possible that your buffer's set too low?

Any skipping is far more likely to be caused by something hardware-related like undersized buffers, video card latency on the pci bus or IRQ conflicts.

Furthermore software is a personal choice. What works brilliantly for me may not suit you at all. For example I find the Cakewalk interface very simple and intuitive to use. Conversely, I've tried using Cubase and it just doesn't work in the way I expect.

If you are going to change your s/w, you need to try a few different programs & see which suits. Something like Cakewalk Home Studio would be worth a look

so you would suggest the problem is most likely hardware?

hey ork, where on LI are you?? im in mastic/shirley area.

I had the same problem with Magix, every other recording program was fine, something wierd with the software.

Two software packages for you to try, since the jury seems split on whether it's your software or your hardware that's giving you trouble.

The first is Tracktion. They have a free demo that's unrestricted for 10 days or two weeks. If you like it it's $150 to buy your own.

The second is free altogether, and is called Reaper. The reason it's free now is it's still in beta testing, and when I first tried it a few months ago it was crash-prone. It's MUCH better in the current version and has yet to crash.

For both you may need a small program called ASIO4all which is a 'universal driver'. Be sure to read the documentation that comes in the package.

If you are Looking for something extremely easy to use but is still as Functional as the More popular Programs then I also suggest trying "Mackie Traction v2.1" as it is what I use and it is pretty much a No brainer to figure out but you can still do pretty much anything with it.....

not really. I came to Sequoia/Samplitude from wavelab, nuendo, and soundforge...nothing comes close to Sequoia/Samp...

Pyramix is my 2nd weapon of choice, and Sadie is my 3rd.
