i am now trying to find the best preamp and audio interface that works for a macbook. from my hours of research i am seeing that drivers are a real issue with these. at the end of the day i just need a phantom power supply for my RODE microphone but got directed towards preamp/audio interface. i am trying to stay around $100, but should I spend up to $200+ to get the quality i need? the most important issue is quality and not having to worry about drivers - i really want plug and play.

i am going towards recording an album with the mic plugged into Garage Band that will record tracks of cello, classical guitar, vocals. i have the mic ready and just need a way to get it plugged into my macbook :)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know macs at all but I seem to recall that they have a S/PDIF input?

If this is the case you could eleminate any possible AI hassle and simply get the Audient Mico preamp.
This does not get much press but it very well regarded, 2 channels, DI and very good onboard converter to S/PDIF out.

How you go about MONITORING is a can of yet other inverabrates!

thanks for the reply david. i am trying to find something between $100-200 that allows for mic and headphone input and output via usb with 48v. if you know any good options for this i would be greatly appreciative.

Ah! We have a budget, but a sensible one! Ok, in no particular order looking at ZZ sounds...
Focusrite scarlet 2i2
Presonus Audiobox
M-Audio Mobile Pre

These AIs I have read a fair bit about and seem very reliable but I have personal experience of the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 which also comes with a good software bundle, it is however just outside your limit at $229.

Just like to add. The Ka6 has two extra line ins and therefore if funds permitted a "boutiquie" mic pre in the future you can go directly into the converters. Mind you! The mic amps on the Ka6 are PDGood"!
