what "kind " of metal do you listen to ?..i think thats where you should start ..check out what guys already getting the sound you want are using, then tweak it to get Your sound.

It's really more important to match the pickups to the guitar rather than trying to match pickups to a certain type of music.

Pickups are important to achieveing your sound...
But the guitar and the amp are also huge...
Look into Dimarzio and Seymour Duncans... If you want active (which I personally don't like) EMG's take the cake. If you're a fan of Hetfield, Mustain, and Hammett, those EMG's are it! But Dimarzio makes some serious stuff too... usually good to get a humbucker more responsive to gain on the bridge and get something that could kind of mellow down on the neck...

EMG 81's are quite popular. I like the EMG Hz's myself. Little cheaper, and sound quite similar.

Do I ever say that Carvin rules and all else drools? I only say, "Consider..." All that means is, "Take a look..." There are some metal players that like the tones of those pups, but CR316 is going to have to figure it out for himself. There are lots of great pickups and lots of great guitars for metal and other genres. A lot of people don't know about Carvin, so I mention it only in passing.

don't forget the emg presence control switch with the 81 and 85 for the "extra balls factor"

The EMG active's are quite popular for metal. I prefer passive pickups myself. I think the EMG HZ series are too "dark" sounding for metal. I recomend Seymour Duncan "JB" for a versatile/metal pickup or a Duncan "Full Shred". I think the Full Shred is one of the best metal pickups I've used. For the neck I'd say Duncan '59 or Jazz pickup.

Check out the seymour duncan livewire pickups. They're 18V active pickups that are supposed to be less compressed than EMGs, I haven't tried them, but from the specs they should be more lively sounding than EMGs.

come on man ...if thats how you characterize the way you pimp Carvin...then I breathe oxygen "in passing" :D :D :D :D

EMG 81/85 if ya want to be buying 9v batteries constantly
passive ..Seymour Duncan Invaders ...sound as mean as they look

never underestimate the power of a Duncan ;)

Although I think the Duncan JB is the most versatile and best sounding, I don't know many guys that play anything new that don't swear by EMG's with the Kerry King 20db boost.

Short of that, I'd have ot go with Duncan's. I can't tell you how many band rehearsals were spent with people standing like they were rabbit ears trying to get TV reception while trying to get DiNozios to stop whistling and feeding back.

oh yeah-btw- get yourself a good noise gate..:)

I used to swear by the SD JB/Jazz combination. Now the only 'buckers I would consider are WRC's. I have a couple pairs of Darkbursts in 2 Thorn guitars, but they are a very PAFish pickup. For the heavy metal/hard rock vibe go with a set of WRC "Herc" or "Shredder" pups. Expensive, but worth every single penny...really!!!! :D

The batteries last a long time with EMG's. I have had mine in for nearly a year and it's still all good.
