Thanks for all the comments fellas.

I have gotten a chance to listen at a music store to the BM5A's, along with a few standards (HR24, most of the Events and KRKs, etc.) However when I listen to all the ones in the 800+ price range they all sound great, just different.

One of the problems is that I can't just hear 8 pairs of monitors and pick out the one I like after just 10 or 15 mins of listening. I have don't have that kind of ear yet. It takes me a long time to get used to a set of speakers.

That said I do think I like the BM5A's the best out of what I have heard.

Also, I've been hearing a lot that for a project studio, where your in a small room, getting a larger speaker is actually bad. That the bass will distort and basically getting the larger speaker to get more bass will become useless in a smaller room. I am and will be in a smaller room for a long time. Do you think I would be better off with a smaller speaker? Granted the BM5A's, at 6.9inches is not that small, i think it would benefit me more than an 8inch speaker.

yeah, N8...at that price its like cars, their all pretty damn nice just different.
damn i've almost popped the card on some 5A's twice now....

i'm under the same assumption.
for my small room, i'd probably go with a 4-6" even without money being an issue.
KRKV6,DynBM5/6, Mackie would be 6"...

I had the KRK RP8" at home for a weekend or two. It was gorgeous my favorite pick from GC (other than the V8$$$),
but when i sat at the mix spot it was too big...the air pumping out actually blew in my face! it sucked...can't have that.

in terms of the "throw of the speaker" design,
i think 4"-6" is perfect for the 3ft/1m.
there is a reason for this being chosen. maybe even some physics knowledge was put into the NS10..being 6"?? he didn't go out and get a 12" or 10" which were also consumer speaker sizes?

I've always thought about this...
15" PA speakers is way too big. Obvious!
8-12" i think you need some rooom..at 10- 20ft away.. guitar cabinets, full size Hifi, Large studio with a large EE triangle for mix seat.

...and well, of course...... 1/2" to 2" is too small to sit 3ft away. great for headphones...or IPods...or alarm clocks.

I've asked numerous times..but have never seen a "set" of recommended values. or speaker throw, i'm amazed by the designers who can tell & understand how the coil wrappings and magnet force can totally alter the sound of a speaker.

In small HR rooms...
Bass is the most difficult and the rooms suck.
So Nearfield helps take the room out of the equation, 4,5,6" probably best, and probably appear at 3ft to have tighter bass sounds in a small, HR untreated room... speaker throw....distance from speaker must be optimized for best results.

so alot of the flabby bass maybe the room and/or the larger speaker being too close. so the sub is a big debate in a small untreated room. does it sound flabby and rumbling because of the room?? outdoors it may be nice and tight!

which brings about sub-woofers. big ? mark.
i've been playing with and my mixes haven't sounded too hot. i just turn the sub on for a test, as i would a small pc speaker (too lazy to go to other areas and check it out which is even better)... it will stay there because of its ability to go waaayyy dooowwwnn. but for 75% of mixes, i'm not sure.

when shopping.. the larger bass and/or sub..probably will sound better in the store, to newb's & novices, but may not be the best tool for the job.

proofs in the pudding or the mixes translating in this case. always the same conclusion..your left with your ears and tastes and does your mix sound like ASS in the real world.

Genelec 1029A's
Yamaha MSP5's

Both came out on top of a recent Future Music best monitors between 400 and 1000 Pounds Sterling allowing for exchange rates they are both under 1000 Bucks.
Sorry if I am late and you have already purchased but I thought I would throw in the information anyway.

i couldn´t hear the msp5´s for longer than 10 minutes. There metal tweeter sound isn´t for me.

what about the new yamaha HS series ? I think HS is a new serie of monitors from yamaha and the MSP´s will further exist ?

Blue Skies

Have had great results (no fatigue, good mix translation to other systems) with Blue Sky Pro Desk monitors. Worth checking out.

i re-read it. my interpretation is he said they were "OK for this price range."
"active may have a slightly better crossover..."
my other interpretation is he didn't spend much time with them, short listen..
and he didn't toss out/ dispose of his other monitors.
Massive didn't get rid of his BW802's for the $189 pair Wharfs either.

it's like my car-head friend, he has a mint rare Corvette, pristine and pampered...$49,000 used!
but he also has a beater-crap van he uses for backup, trash hauling etc.. smokes cigerrettes in it!

so the Wharfs and similar, BW303, are like the beater set for the serious pro's line, or analyitical/detailed as you want. imo.

so Fern's,
you have the Wharfs. I'd recommend if you upgrade to go up the ladder, save$$$, get another job for a few months..whtever...take out a loan!
but buy a Corvette or BMW....or DynAudio, Adam, KRK V series in this case.
Even Deep always is saying, best thing "under $1,000"... he never said it's better than every speaker on earth, throw away your Westlakes.

hell, i might even do a A/B with some KRK V's...i wish we had Dyn's around here. All I have is Mackie and KRK at this level and i tended to like the KRK a bit more. and my songwriting has been 'sht, i feel like a retard at times, no mojo? thats when i paddle the row boat around the threads.

but believe me, Fern's!
i don't have money to throw around!!..so if my skills or ears, or mixes don't see a difference, i'm not buying them just to look at or talk about.

fhkng electric/gas is so high..i could have bought 3 pairs of DynAudio fhkng 5A's!!! fhk the Oil Cartels!!

Fernes..

no you don't...

YOU JUST LIKE THE IDEA OF GETTING NEW HI-END STUDIO MONITORS!!! :p

i'm starting to think, i don't really need that heat this winter...maybe go for the Dyn's...and gamble that $40 shipping!!
