I can no longer use these cheap computer speakers to make demos. I need real monitors. What are the best for the money? I can spend about $400

A tiny bit past your range but the Yorkville YSM-1P are really good for the price.

Behringer Truths about $400
Alesis Active 1's about $400

With monitors you have to go and hear them yourself before making a decision.

Where's Blue Bear gone:D

I have heard some good things about the Tannoy Reveals ($399) but I am saving my money for some Mackie HR824s! I figure I might as well go all out for the only thing in the studio that I actually hear!!

13th_Omen, I've got the Tannoy Reveal Actives. They rock. They are so cyrstal clear you can hear the reverb bouncing off the wall in the recording!

I've heard good things about the Mackie's. They were a bit out my price range. My only complaint with the Tannoy's is because they have a 6" cone the low end isn't that powerful and takes a bit to get used. The Mackie's have 8" which should give a really powerful low end.

I was literally minutes away from ordering the Reveals when I at the last minute said fuck it, why not wait another month to save up for the bomb monitors!! Now I just have to find a way to get a recording done! I have been researching every possible way to set up my studio using what I have and deciding what to buy. ADAT or Harddisk, PC or MAC, MOTU or Pro Tools. This is really starting to suck!

Have you bought anything yet or still deciding?
What's your budget?

I have:

-16 channel snake (xlr)
-Yamaha 16 channel mixer (this is where I recieve the snake)
-Behringer 16 channel mixer
-(1) Alesis ADAT LX20

rack:
-power conditioner
-Behringer PX2000 patchbay
-Behringer Virtualizer Pro Effects
-Digitech Harmonizer
-Behringer Compressor
-Behringer Headphone Amp

I don't have the computer yet, because I am going to build it specifically for what setup I decide on. My budget is not all that large, but significant enough that could probably go the MOTU route or equivalent.

Yep definately the way to go. I built my own a couple of months ago. It works great. Just make sure you check on the manufaturers site for the soundcard for incompatibilities.

How many tracks at once do you need?

Please don't make fun of all my Behringer stuff!

Don't worry I use a Behringer Mixer and V-Amp and they haven't stuffed up once. :D

I need 16 tracks. 8 is not enough and 24 is more than I need. I use 9 for drums, 2 for vocals, one or 2 for bass, and usually 3 for guitars. I would like to get 24 going but then I would have to use both my mixers for tracking and wouldn't really have a way to monitor (i have been using the Behringer for my monitoring mix).

Ummm, dont forget that if you spending money on the Tannoy Reveals that are $350 they are passive. You wont get very far without a good amp :).

They are great monitors though :). I disagree about the lows on them though. Its not because they are 6" woofers its just because they only go down to 65hz. I think this is Tannoys marketing strategy to make you buy the Sub that go with them :). But i bet if you changed the crossover you could have just as low and deep bass as any monitor although i could be wrong on that :). But i havnt had too many problems monitoring bass on them.

wouldn't getting a sub for monitors ruin the whole point of monitors?

not really. If the monitors cant produce low-end well, its smart.

In a small room though with low ceilings it can do more bad than good due to the already high amounts of bass. It'll probably sound flabby and all over the place.

If you have a treated room though it can sound tight and extend your low end.

yes, you're right. the room has a lot more to do with the sound than your monitors and ears.

Hope this helps...

I recently bought a pair of Event PS-6 monitors. I know they are discontinued but I bought them for $300 for the pair. If you check around maybe you can get a pair for a good price also. They sound great! Dan
