I am a beginner looking into buying some gear. I want a good multi purpose Microphone. I will be mainly usign it for vocals so keep that in the forfront when you think on this. The only other time I will use it is to record an acoustic guitar that has nylon strings and no pickup. So I need a good (not TERRIBLY expensive) microphone. I assume that Condensor microphones are the best. I don't knwo anything about them. I need to know a few brands and models. And I hope that a limited price range goes without saying. $200 is not the TOP but anything more better make me sound like Pavaratti. I realize that in the world of Microhpnes $200 isn't shit but, I am a home recorder, not Bob Rock.

Step up a bit and stay happy longer...

Spend another $100-125 and get an AT 4033. It is a mic that you will find little critisism on, and has been used to record very big time vocalists in the past, and probably still in the present.

No professional engineer would argue that it is a much finer mic then the NT1. Period. This same question has been covered many many times on this BBS, and the consensus has always been from the people recording for money that the AT 4033 wins hands down, and is definately worth the extra cash when compared to the cheaper mics.

Don't throw your money at something that will disappoint you down the road. Get something decent now and it will serve you well for many years to come. Go to my mp3 page on my website and download the many many tracks I have used the 4033 on. It is my main large diaphram condensor mic, and it sounds very good. It used to sell for more then double it's current price, so you can be assured that it is worth every penny you pay for it now.

I definately agree with sonusman. the Audio Technica AT4033 is an EXCELLENT mic. i just got mine 2 days ago (my first large diaphram and condenser mic). i bought it for $380 overnight shipping from sweetwater ($370 at musicians friend, but sweetwater has AWESOME support, highly recommended, especially for home recorders). one of the best parts is it is comes with the shock mount. It has a very nice warm sound on everything, vocals and i have recorded acoustic guitar, nice clear and warm sound. it used to be i used a SM57 and a condenser a foot back from the guitar, but now, the AT4033 goes about a half a foot away from the guitar and i got rid of the sm57. the price of this very nice mic is definately the best part.

Ooooo baby...

You're making my mouth water just talking about the AT4033.... I SO wish that I had the funds for one. :-)
I've got a 6 channel phantom power supply with 5 vacant spaces just WAITING for a new condenser mic to come along..heheh. :)

Real quick, what is the diff. between the AT4033aSC 40-Series and the AT4033aSM 40-Series? Besides $200 (list, same price at zzounds)? Is (duh) the more expensive one better?

The SC comes with a case for the microphone (and probably the shock mount too) the SM just come with a shock mount and a protector leather case (with foam) which is all i need to store my mic in. The SC case probably is metal and can holds more than 1 mic in it, though im not sure.
