best mic for the buck

Well, probably, but the original question wasn't about getting the best recording. He asked if he could use a single ECM8000 to record a friend's songs (who simply wanted to use the recordings for documenting his material). My answer remains yes, but the placement is important and you won't get the "BIG" sound that pressure gradient mics provide. But, for $35, it ain't bad.

Harvey,

I say this because China wanted to build the same mic for me, and I turned them down. Not because I did not want an innexpensive mic, but I have a design I am working on for a SD mic, but not at that price. If I want, I could have the same mic under my new B Series name in three weeks, but I just don't want to play there, so I said no. Any mic I do has to be from me, not off the shelf.

I was told by two sources that build these for Behringer that they are made in Taiwan. So, yes, I said pretty sure based on what I have been told, so since I do not have one of these mics, someone will have to either open it, or ask Behringer directly.

If I am wrong, then I am wrong, but......

Naw Alan, I'm only saying that it doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me for Taiwan NOT to use the Panasonic capsule, or a pretty damn close equivalent. I suspect these suckers are probably glued in place, so I'm gonna have to do some breaking in on the Behringer stuff, but now you've got me really curious about what's inside.

I'm using one of the Behringers right now, along with the two TR-40s, as the middle of three cymbal mics. As soon as the session ends today, I'll start pulling the mics apart and try and post pictures of what I find.

Cool!

Harvey's the man!
Incidently, Harvey, how much of a difference do you sense between the ECM8000 and the TR40 when using both? I like em a lot but I don't have anything to compare them to.

Thanks again for the recommendation,
