Best Mic For Guitar Cab

I've heard a lot of good about the EV635a. I've been trying to get one on ebay for the past few months.. but i keep getting snagged in the last few minutes when I'm not around.
 
lol its all about that last minute. thats how i snagged a pair of mxl 603s i inched out somebody with 20 seconds to go.

I definitely agree that there is no "right" mic in all situations, but there are a few that just about never let me down. The sm57 and the 421 are definitely the first two I try. But lately, I've been going with the Sennheiser e609 silver...that thing ROCKS! It's like it just makes every amp sound better. Even on that new Guitar Rig software, I like the e609s the most everytime...kind of weird.

great im going to go blow my whole paycheck on beyer mics now.... weee.... if you guys need me next month ill be at the local homeless shelter.... with my SHINY NEW MICS!!

If 3 mics puts you in a homeless shelter, then you don't need to be buying anything. Maybe I'll throw ya' a quarter if I see ya panhandling.

I tried live (close) mic'ing my Deluxe with a B1 and it didn't work well at all. It sounded brittle and introduced a low level crackly distortion that was not coming from the amp. It might have been preamp overload, though; the B1 is a very hot mic and I had to pot down the preamp pad almost to the bottom to keep the clip light off.

YMMV, of course...
 
If you can find an RE38 get it! This mic is so rare I doubt you'll even find any info about it online. The greatness of this mic is its multiple eq curve selections on the back. The RE38 is a serious work horse. I love it!
 
This thread and the responses indicate the reality that almost any decent mic can sound good on the right amp. Let's see- almost anything by Electrovoice (RE whatever) or Beyerdynamic (M- whatever), AKG C414 (I'll add C2000B, which is a great cab mic, and D320/330 series, discontinued, but cheap), Sennheiser e609 silver, MD421, Shure SM 57/58, SM7., and the list goes on.
The original poster has asked "what's the best film for taking pictures of nude women"? Wonder why you get a lot of answers? Based on all of that, my suggestion is this- Don't worry about cab mics. Just get mics that are good for *something*, and then stick them on your cab and see if you like it. What you can get out of all of this is that there is a tendancy (not a rule) to use dynamic mics on cabs. The louder and more distorted they are, the more this tendancy applies. Any good dynamic mic can be good for the job. Some of the greatest and most expensive dynamics are ribbons, and they have been used for years in that capacity. On cleaner and quieter cabs, condensers are an option, and may be used in combination with a dynamic.
Due to potential damage from high SPL's, not too many people will recommend you put your Neumann U47 or other multi-thousand dollar condenser in front of a Marshall stack. Oh well, you were really asking what people's favorites are- these are mine-
Sennheiser e609 silver,EV N/D257, AKG C2000B, Shure SM7B, AKG D320B. I tend to use the Sennheiser, thw EV or the D320B on loud nasty cabs and the SM7 or C2000B on cleaner, quieter stuff. Note that what marks all of the above, both my favorites and others, is that they are mics that have multiple uses, not just cabs. If you have a cabinet with a bunch of useable mics, some mic or other will work for you on cabs. So- don't worry about buying a good *cab* mic- Just get a *good* mic. You should probably start with a good dynamic.-Richie
 
If I may, and I've probably posted this question once before, has somebody had any experience using a MXL 2003 to record distorted guitar from a cab? Yes, I know it's a condenser mic and not many folks use them for such application I guess. However, some have praised a GT44 (tube) for this and I've been wondering why the GT44 and not perhaps, a MXL2003 (which would save me some big bucks and probably give me the same flexibility to use it for voice and other applications)?

In my case, this is home recording, and I won't be cracking my Mesa amp to 10 to record. So I guess potential damage for the mic due to SPL is extremely unlikely.
 
lots of times amps sound better when you push them to the limit .... for example i know that when Stevie Ray Vaughan was alive and recording albums, he would turn his amps up as high as he could before it got distorted for recording ... then he used the ibanez tube screamer for distortion.... and if you turn it up that high then your gonna need a Dynamic i'm looking in to the Shure or the Shenniser... .or how ever you spell it
 
well, I was suprised that I didn't like my sm57 alone on my cab. It sounded broken. Maybe it is, actually, but don't these things last forever and take a beating???

So I had to put it 2 feet away at 45 degrees. Then I had to add sp b3 omni mode for room at 70 deg. and 4 feet. I had to mix both, I didn't like just the sm57.
