Best kind of stand for a desk?

Hey guys,

Was just on the lookout for good desk mic stands, and was wondering if there's any 'go to' stands that are always recommended? I've seen the Samson MD5 as a highly rated one, although it does look a little short. Would I be better off with the boom mic stands, but in desktop form?

Any recommendations would be welcome. Just something nice and sturdy for holding a mic/shockmount/pop filter. The usual.

Maybe a kick drum/guitar amp type stand or a scissor stand?

The MD5 is not adjustable so might not fit your needs. There are short solid and tripod base stands that are adjustable and even short boom stands. The only issue with using a table stand could be rumble thru the table top even with a shock mount.

With the MD5, the only thing I was thinking of is maybe a gooseneck extension to provide the extra length I might need so that I wouldn't end up hunching over.

Otherwise, thanks for the suggestions. Any particular brands and such that are known for quality that you'd recommend?

Yeah, voice overs/singing will be the application.

I would get one if I could, but space would be an issue with a full size one.

I would go with what Kip4 has suggested. Space will not be an issue here for I have gotten boom microphone stands into the smallest places including small rooms with full drum sets to voice over work in small confined areas. Once you have the base fitted into an area then the stand and boom can be arranged way out of your way and not cramp your working/living area.

I'd need to give it a look through, then. Although I still doubt I could find room. I have an IKEA galant setup that sprawls across half the room that takes up the majority of free space.

Just need a few inches of space, if that, between the wall and the table top and you can come in over the top with the boom.

Like moresound says the full size boom stand has a small foot print and will fit into most spaces.
If your going to be singing you will need one anyway because your posture will be better stood up and your breathing too.
As for voice overs position the boom coming in from above or the side and when you leave your seated position you can just swing it out of the way.
Be careful not to tip it up with the wieght of the mic/pop shield (assuming its a condensor mic).
to help avoid this have one of the stands legs pointing the same way as the boom when in use or fill a cotton/plasic bag with some sand to wieght to stand down.
reasonably priced stands can be found on amazon, ebay or guitar centre (assuming your in the usa)

If I do go the desk route, can the boom mic part be unscrewed, leaving me with just the stand if I wanted? having that dual functionality would be pretty handy.

Those stands are nice but bigger than you might think. A good foot and a half tall to where you would unscrew the boom arm.

To help visualize this better, here's a paint picture of my working area (I have the best paint skills, I know)

The space from the desk and the wall is probably only an inch, if not maybe two. My main concern with a floor boom mic stand is the fact that I very much doubt that the boom end will be able to go anywhere without hitting the wall. I could put it to the left, but then it'll get in the way of the book shelf.

Which left my only two options that I could see working: The tripod like stand and the small boom mic stand. (I seen a video of them both at Podcasting Microphone Stand Review - How to Podcast - YouTube and they looked really good. I know it's podcasting, but I'd be doing mostly voice over work so I don't think it'd matter too much). With those, I'd place them just under the second monitor on the picture (closer for the tripod one, as I believe I'd have to hunch over to reach it) and then extend the boom over when needed.

So, based on that, is my reservations for the full stand boom mic justified? Or am I over exaggerating how much space the boom part actually takes up?

That guy's first problem with the boom stand slipping can be fixed by taking the knob off and inserting a bb into the hole then putting the knob back on. Then a simple weight on those cheap onstage stands work like a charm

One thing you can do is to have your microphone stand and microphone come up and over the top of your head!

The small boom in your post #11 could work as well for you - you can set it on the desk to your left towards the book shelf. For it doesn't need to be in front of you.

But his final stand the desk boom should do the trick for you and is very adjustable and professional.

Yeah, the idea I was going for was to have the microphone come up over my head, so I wouldn't have to lean forward like with the regular desk stands.

Yeah, I was hoping to have it either to the right or left of me and then come up overhead, that sounded quite nice.

The final stand, you mean the tripod one? It looked pretty good and is really cheap from what I've seen.

I'll be using an AT2035.

Not the tripod one - the desk boom it attaches right to the desk. You see them all of the time used by pro radio guys.

I'm based in the UK, so had a look. Seems hard to find in the UK. And like I said, with everything I just bought that's a bit of a high cost, would have to think about that one.
