I am working on a Fender Squier Strat, and i am plannign on taking out ALL of the single coil pickups, and putting one humbucker in the bridge spot, putting on new tuners, new wiring, and putting on a custom pick guard. My question is, what humbucker would be best, i play rythm guitar(and a bit of lead) in a punk/rock band. I want something that distorts well. I have been advised to get a PRS santana model humbucker by a friend, but i figured i would ask and see what else is out there. I would also like to keep it near or under 200$ cdn.
thanks in advance
Simon

I bet you are a fan of Tom Delonge/blink182.
You should try the seymour duncan sh-4 (jb)
For more distortion you should try the sh-6.
You could also try the dimarzio PAF pro distortion.
Another one you should consider is the one that Tom Delonge uses, the invader. I have no idea who it is from but thats it. I hope this helps. I once had to make the same decision and chose the sh-4 jb. worked pretty good.
kevin (p.s. theese average around 69.99 american)

I did a little research. I am a fan of the guitar sound of tom, but not so much of a fan of his, so i checked out the invader, it is a seymour duncan model, and i think i may see if my local guitar dealers carry it, or can order it for me. Also i want a really smooth distortion, if you havre any othe seuggestions, i apreciate it.
thanks
Simon

For distortion you should use an amps distortion. Preferably mesa/boogie. Tom uses the mesa boogie triple rectifier amp for his distortion but is around $1200-$1300 american. Check out

It is the single rectifier but is pretty much the same thing that tom uses. The only thing is, you can get it as a combo too wich is usually what people prefer. But it is still just as exspensive. Tell me what your price range is (american please if you know it, if not, ill figure it out) and i will give more suggestions.
Kevin.

I hope you meant that kind of disortion and not a humbucker's.

If it's simply distortion you're looking for, check out amps before changing pickups (although a humbucker is more conducive to getting a fat sound).

You can plug a broom into a Mesa and get distortion (or as I prefer to call it "smooth gain). Of course, if you're going the punk/grunge route, you may want crunch instead of smooth. Check out different amps (I'm assuming that you can't afford a Mesa if you're playing a Squier).

you are very right in that i cannot afford a boogie/mesa amp, i was aware that tom used that. I was however reffering to the output of the humbucker(tone and such) being good for distortion of that sort. Right now the pickup set up is just two factory single coil pickups set together to reduce hum. THAT is why i want a new pickup, and i just figured i would get a really nice one rightoff.

Well then just get the invader. You would be better off with that.

Well i got my local dealer to order the invader today, so in a little while we will see what it has got.
