I do like that tone. I have noticed amp sims work better on clean then on the overdrive channel. Amp sim overdrive has never beene suitable enough for me.

Yeah, I get almost the same tone from my Yamaha Strat copy through the same setup, but not quite as good (and my playing isn't nearly as good as his ;)).

He sent me an FX preset for Reaper if any Reaper users wants me to upload it somewhere. It uses a couple of additional, but free, plugins like MyMag and GlaceVerb although you can still get the same sound without those.

Would you mind sharing the settings you used for the guitar sample you posted earlier? And what guitar you used. Any any processing after the guitar or before if any?
Would really appreciate this.

Cheers,
Eck

Hearing that sample makes me want to demand my $ back from IK media!
I have not tried free amp sims simply because I already bought what I thought was a decent one. (and if there was a free one that beat it I didn't want to know. Thanks for that!! J/K) it looks like alot of people are just not familiar with these tho, and the good part is this thread is enlightening us poor ignorant souls. Why oh why did I give IK Media my $.

For those not enjoying your amp sim plugins, make DAMN SURE you are bringing the guitar in at a sensible level and impedance.

Use a DI to get in, don't just go plugging into a line input

I'll upload the preset somewhere and also post screenshots for those who don't have Reaper, just give me a few. ;)

First, you need to download these (free) plugins, and put them in your VST folder.

MyMag
SimulAnalog Guitar Suite
ReaEQ (Comes with Reaper)
GlaceVerb

Then unzip the file I attached and put it in a folder somewhere. Reaper's default location for FXChains is:

C:\Documents and Settings\<YourWindowsUserName>\Application Data\REAPER\FXChains

Then you add a track, click the FX button, and click the "FXChains" section from the list on the left and it should show up. Or you could click the FX menu and browse for it by clicking "Add FX Chain..."

For those without Reaper, here are the screenshots of the plugins/settings:

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't be too disappointed, Amplitube is pretty bad-ass. It's also seems much easier and faster to dial up a nice tone.

(But I still haven't tried all the free alternatives...)

Hmm over 200 views and still only 7 votes

Come on guys!

If you can still edit the first post, you could put links to where everybody can download each one...might help you get some more opinions.

Just a thought... ;)

I just tried the simulanalog one yesterday - the Marshall sim is not too shabby. I'll be checking out the rest soon.

I posted this thread on a few other forums and all but one voted :-

1/ Simulanalog Guitar Suite

2/ FreeAmp 3

3/ Boogex

Every forum has voted Guitar Suite and no.1. but one dedicated guitar amp modeling forum voted Dirthead 0.8 joint first with Guitar Suite!?

I'm definately gonna install the above 3 onto my computer but am not sure about the others. Am thinking of :-

Studio Devil BVC
Juicy 77
Dirthead 0.8

Thankyou for all you posts and votes so far!

I had a go at getting a tone similar to yours. I got nowhere close.
My DI guitar recording sounded quite muddy on the way in (not had a chance to record a new take), although I couldnt hear distortion. But when I added the Simulanalog plug with the same settings as you, I got some distortion.

Thanks for the settings, not sure why I cant get even anywhere close to your sound though. Im using a PRS McCarty Soapbar, but I am using a shity soundcard so that might be part of the problem.

I've used & had some good results with Boogex - particularly the cab mic'ing component. So I voted for that. the only other I've used was MDA & I actually had a bunch of their freebies and have been slowly deleting them as I don't like most of them, (probably just can't use them properly).
I used Boogex quite a bit as I'm not good at getting a solid distorted sound (not metal, not shred head stuff) from my gear. I've since spent more time experimenting AND bought an attenuator (tube cube) a combination through which my ears aren't bleeding and I've improved the tone I've captured.

I've never used a Soapbar pickup. I use different settings for my guitar with humbuckers though. The tone between those 2 pickups is just so different you can't get the same sound. I don't know what Soapbars sound like.

Try it with a strat-like guitar. I use a cheap Yamaha electric strat copy and even though it's a POS guitar, the direct sound is really good.

The soundcard won't keep you from getting the same sound.

This is a really good thread!!!!!!! Im deployed at the moment but in 3 more weeks....ish. You can bet your sweet Arse im gonna try these out. Thank you!!!!!!!

Can you use these to record in sonar 7?..............just wondering.
