I'd try the newbie section with this.

Can't comment on Audacity. Tried Kristal and it worked, but on my computer, the record/playback levels seemed very low, you can't use free VST plugs, 16 track limit bugged me.

Reaper is my recording software of choice. Most free VST plugs work with it. Reaper works primarily on 1 screen, you can record as many tracks as your computer will handle, very easy to decipher interface, recorded tracks sound good, has very few/no user limitations. Even though it is a $40 shareware product now, it is worth that and then some.

Check out the Summer issue of 'Computer Music' magazine... there's a free, no-strings-attached LE version of Samplitude available on the included DVD-ROM.

reaper is great. amazing routing and vst compatability. you can download it to use for as long as you want untill you begin using it for commercial gain, where you need to spend the $40 to use it. but justin (the developer) said that he doesnt mind if you use it and honestly just cant afford it. basically, if you get enough excess to afford it, you should pay for it, if not, dont.

I vote for George Bush! What is this an election? All this campaigning for Reaper is getting old. Didn't this dude ask about FREE software?

Is it time limited in any way or just a lighter version of Samplitude? I am really interested in trying it out.

Cracked versions of Nuendo,Cubase or Sonar are prob'ly the best!
I would go with those! :)

These would definetly be a lot better then any free program out there but is it moraly worth while? Why not just save the money and buy it legit?

The Computer Music Magazine version of Samplitude is not time-limited or save-restricted. It's a "lite" version, Samplitude V8 SE, of Samplitude 8. Apparently there are some issues with MIDI timing but the MAGIX/Samplitude forums are slowly becoming more useful and they should be able to iron out any problems. (The Help documentation is not good enough - let's hope Version 9 comes with tutorials and demo songs.). I've found the program pretty easy to use - it's the first package that's allowed me, a complete newbie, to make something that resembles music. My untrained ears think the sound quality is excellent.

Here's what you get:

- 48 tracks, 2 submix buses, 4 aux buses
- Consistent use of 32-bit floating point processing
- ASIO, MME, and WDM support
- Comprehensive realtime audio editor functions
- Unique object-oriented editing options
- Batch processing, flexible mixer with variable signal flow
- ReWire, DirectX and VST plugin support
- Automatic latency compensation for Samplitude effects
- VSTi support incl. 8 separate outputs
- MIDI recording & editing
- Supports up to 8 I/Os (24-bit/96 kHz)
- Mixer automation (vol. pan), 5x undo/redo
- High-quality effects: Normalize, 4-band parametric EQ, Stereo Enhancer, Amp Simulation, Vocoder, Dehisser, Timestretching/Pitchshifting, Panorama, Dynamics (Compressor, Expander, Noise Gate, Limiter), Reverb, Delay, Resampling, Declipping, Distortion, Noise Reduction, Phase Invert

Not too shabby. :) Speaking as a musical/computing know-nothing, I think it's amazing for a free package.

If you can't get hold of a copy of CM Magazine then you can download Samp V8 SE from the Samplitude V8 SE website. Version 9 of Samp has just been released so I guess that MAGIX is hoping to attract new customers by giving them this free software. Honestly, they're like drug dealers... ;)

I hope this helps you. :)

Heads up, guys who are suggesting Reaper:

Reaper IS NOT FREE ANYMORE

# Purchase commercial-use license for $199.95 USD
http://www.reaper.fm/purchase.php

yes it is still free...he just SUGGESTS purchasing it. he isnt going to hunt you down if you dont, or if you dont have the dough, he wont hold it against you...

samplitude gets my vote.

Kristal works....... bit shit though
