The main problem I find with solid state is that they dont cut thru a mix
very well,but I have heard some sound good with the right player and
situation.Usually that situation will be a single guitar band.
For the most part,SS is muddy and undefined,where-as tube is up front
and in your face.IMNSHO,anyone playing on SS,would sound better on a
good tube amp.

I still dig my Line 6 Flextone I. The high gain stuff sounds pretty much dead on like a tube head in a live situation. Recording ain't bad either.

I've been eye-balling Carvin's solid state head for a bit now. 3 channels, built-in effects. Their amps are usually kick ass.

If you really think that that amp sounds good(line 6) on the hi-gain stuff,
you need more experience with tube amps.I had the sad experience of a
shop giving me one of these as a loner while my fender twin was being refurbished.The tone was embarrising.Glad I didnt have to play any gigs
with it.
I really hate to come across as a gear snob,but I am.There is no comp-arison between SS and tubes.
 
I'm a total gear junkie and use 2 Fender "The Twin" amps when gigging, I also take a line out of the first stage, put it through a DI box and put that into a solid state 70 watt, it comes out OK, but I only do it 'cause I can.
But SS aint in the same street as tube.

It can be.
Now don't get me wrong ..... I'm a tube guy ..... I have a collection of 13 tube amps that'd have you guys salivating. And I also have Line 6 stuff which sounds like ass.

But I have had a couple of SS amps that were pretty good sounding ...... close to tubes in fact. An old Dean Markley which I wish hadn't died ...... and a very old Traynor which kicked ass and I wish I still had it.
 
I voted line 6.................as a die hard user they rock

also the peavey special112 takes a bit of beating

also a peterson 100watt jazz combo rules as well
 
The Lab L9...100 watts through a 15" Electro Voice speaker, with circuitry ( including a built-in opto-compressor) by Bob Moog.
 
I;m actually quite surprised with my new Laney i just picked up. after that whole schpeel with the peavey valveking some of you probably read about, i was disappointed i couldnt get a tube amp, but im very happy with this amp.

Yeah .. those Laney Tube Fusion amps sound pretty good. I have the TF-50 which sounded great for about 6 gigs 'till it blowed up real good.

It did sound good though ..... I need to get it fixed 'cause a little small amp like that is a neccessary unit in the amp locker.
 
I bounce back and forth between my Gorilla stack and my Crate....
Sometimes I'll combine them for an earthshattering creamy distortion that you just can't get with tubes.

Sometimes I like to mix my berhinger pres with a cheap Radioshack mic.
The transparency is earth shattering.You could never get that sound with
a Neve and a U47.

I think you must really like pain in your back.TWO TWINS?Do you have a roady?
 
ss amps ??

for most of my gigs i run through 2 marshall mg,s and i get great tone clean and w/ gain. the few outdoor big gigs i do i use my ampeg vh 140c through a crate 4/12 cab the ampeg also has great tone and a little better clean channel. w/ tons of volume

I voted for other because my favorite soid state guitar amps are Kustom. You don't hear much about these amps any more. I used a Kustom 200 for a few years and really liked the thing ... I have tried several of the newer Kustom amps and I love 'em too.
If I were to play a solid state amp again it would be a Kustom.
The problem is that I am hooked on tube amps. especially Traynor tube amps.

Yep, I vote for Kustom too. I have a kustom 200watt dfx head I bought for the clean channel, but found the distortion to be the best I have ever played for a solid state. The kustom cabs are a little weak but the tones i get are pretty damn good.
 
Of the solid state amps that I've actually owned my favorite is the Gallien Krueger 250ML. It's small enough to carry with one hand, yet it can power 2 Marshall 4x12 cabs in stereo.
 
Owned a JC 120 for years. Incredible amp for clean sounds, however it has a very stiff and quick response so getting a good overdriven sound (even using pedals) is difficult. Also loud as hell.

Sold it for a Tech 21 Trademark 60, an absolutely wonderful amp. Sounds much bigger than it is with great low end response and headroom for days. Every now and then I'll try some of the new amps on the market and in my opinion nothing can match it it terms of size (portability), features, and tone...
 
Peavey Bandit 112, Sheffield speaker version.
I make no apologies, well, apart from the fact I'm left handed.

I vote Crate. Granted, it's pretty much the only amp I've had, but still... it's been good to me. I'd glady get another.
