best distortion pedal?

I have 2 Peavey Stereo Chorus 212's. They have a crunch chanel and a lead chanel. They sound really good with a Les Paul. Not so good with a Strat. I used to have a TS9 but foolishly sold it. I plan on getting another to add to my collection. I looked at the schematic of the TS808 upgrade and the only change is to the value of 2 resistors. I may build one and see if it sounds that good.
 
I can't believe you guys haven't said anything about the Fender Blender. It's known to melt paint off the walls. It also sells for around $350-$500.

Re the Dod you might want to try the Boss DS1. I know the bypass is dodgy and the sound can be thin. But they are made like a tank.

Re the amp thing. I have a Vox AC15 ri because I can wind it up and full on sounds amazing. However I have 3 overdrives a distortion and a fuzz. I normally use 2 pedals at any one time. I also 'need' a high gain distortion to fill the gap.

Re the Tube screamer-they are great with a Strat. I have only played my TS10 (it was cheap) with my Strat. There is some snobbery about the 808 or TS9. If you like the reissue fine if you see a TS10 buy it and mod it if you have to. My one has the 4558D chip but I dont have any comparison.
There are other options like the Route 66 or the Maxon OD 808.

Boutique stuff is great but I am frightened to take my fuzz to a gig.

In the end its your choice. If I had to do a gig with one pedal its the TS if I had no pedals I would roll off the guitar volume to 6 and have the amp full on and wind up the vol for leads.

Those dod pedals will stop working if they gets something spilled on it or humidity Etc. (i had one, a dog p*ss*d on it) you may be able to save it if you can get to the contact between the pedal and switch and clean it with electronics cleaner from radio shack.
